LotutoHello everyone, I would like to know: What are your experiences with Ikea Hemnes furniture in households, especially when children play or live there? I am interested in how durable they are in everyday use, whether there are any safety concerns, and how they hold up in terms of maintenance and longevity with children. It is often said that Hemnes is quite sturdy due to its solid wood construction, but I would like to hear about practical experiences. For example, have you had problems with paint damage from scratches, or is the construction strong enough when small children climb on it? And what about drawers or doors – are there any annoying noises or issues when opening them? In short: I am looking for honest feedback on how Hemnes furniture performs in a household with children.
I think Hemnes is great for kids’ rooms! The furniture is sturdy and looks really nice. Of course, the surface isn’t indestructible, but over time that’s just to be expected. Especially the cabinets with simple drawers are perfect for children because they don’t stick. I would say you get a lot for the price! 😊 Have you ever tried protecting the surface with special care products?

Alberto513 Mar 2021 08:48I can understand the question well, as I have two small children myself and bought Hemnes furniture because I thought it would be especially durable. At first, I was impressed, but then I noticed that the thinner paint layer quickly shows small scratches. That was a bit frustrating, as it affects the appearance. On the other hand, the sturdy joints give me confidence because not every piece of furniture like this can withstand having kids around.
Regarding safety: I secured the furniture to prevent tipping. My children once tried to climb on top of the cabinets, which I didn’t think was ideal. The furniture is solid, but it’s better to be cautious. Therefore, I wouldn’t place them in areas where children can climb unsupervised.

To add to the discussion from a technical perspective: Hemnes furniture is made of solid pine wood, which generally offers high durability. However, the surface finish is thin, so signs of wear tend to appear relatively quickly, especially in households with very active children. I recommend securing the furniture with anti-tip devices, as Alberto51 mentioned. Additionally, the drawers should be checked mechanically because, especially in older models, the metal components can become a bit stiff if maintenance is minimal.
This is sensible since furniture with a small footprint can indeed pose a tipping hazard for children. In conclusion – Hemnes is sturdy, but households with children should always exercise caution.
