Hello everyone, I recently assembled several pieces of Ikea Hemnes furniture in the kids’ room, including cabinets and shelves made of solid pine wood with a light finish. Since these are light-colored, untreated wooden furniture, I’m a bit unsure about the best way to care for the Hemnes furniture in the children’s room to preserve the light color and wood grain over time. Specifically, I’m interested in how to clean them gently and effectively, which cleaning products are suitable or potentially harmful, and whether the furniture should be regularly oiled or waxed. Tips on preventing unsightly stains, such as from drinks or fingerprints, would also be very helpful. Does anyone have experience or recommendations? Thanks in advance!

If you want to save yourself some effort, simply wipe with a damp cloth. The Hemnes furniture is sturdy. Remove stains immediately and do not use oily cleaning agents.

I completely understand how uncertain you can feel about beautiful but delicate furniture. In our children's room, I have always been careful to handle things gently, especially since kids often spill or draw on surfaces. Sometimes, I used a mild soapy solution made from neutral baby soap, and afterwards, I always wiped down with clean water and a dry cloth. It’s also important to me not to apply too much pressure while cleaning to avoid dulling the surface. Over time, I’ve noticed that small scratches and marks add character to the furniture – it makes them come alive. If you ever have stains that won’t come off, you can gently treat them with very fine sandpaper, but that requires experience.

That’s exactly the issue. This lacquer layer isn’t as durable as you might think. Children’s rooms aren’t display cases. Here, people often clean overly cautiously, as if the furniture were delicate dolls. Of course, using harsh cleaners is not a good idea, but you really don’t need to be that careful.

The finish on the Ikea Hemnes is not a high-gloss plastic coating but rather a thin protective paint layer. Therefore, I strongly advise against using aggressive cleaning products. You are right that the surface is delicate. For children's rooms, it is best to clean stains quickly and use gentle, neutral cleaners. Caution is advised regarding "scratch resistance," as the wood will visibly wear down over time.

Just a quick note: Do not oil or wax Hemnes furniture. Clean with a slightly damp cloth, avoid harsh cleaners. Remove stains promptly. This works best.

Thanks to everyone for the responses so far; they have been very helpful. It is now clearer to me that I should clean the furniture using only water and a soft cloth, and avoid using oils or waxes. I still have two questions: What is the best way to remove stains from, for example, colored pencils or juice without damaging the surface? And how UV-resistant are Hemnes furniture pieces – is there any risk if they are placed near a window? Thanks for any advice.
