Hello everyone, I recently bought a Hemnes dresser from Ikea and want to protect the surface as best as possible against scratches. Since the wood surface is either unfinished or lacquered, I’m curious about other people’s experiences with scratch protection for Hemnes furniture. Specifically, I’m interested in whether there are effective protective films, coatings, or possibly special waxes that you would recommend and how well they hold up in daily use, for example with keys, jewelry, or children. Does anyone have tips on materials that don’t discolor or negatively affect the surface texture? Experiences with cleaning and long-term effects are also very welcome. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

That’s a very good question. The Hemnes finish from Ikea is lacquered but rather matte and sensitive to mechanical stress. I recommend:

- Self-adhesive transparent PVC protective films, specially designed for furniture, which are barely visible and remain washable.
- Furniture wax based on beeswax, which protects the surface but slightly changes the texture – be careful not to apply too thickly.
- Avoid aggressive varnishes, as they might alter the color or start peeling.

For cleaning, it’s best to use a damp cloth and mild detergents, not abrasive cleaners. In households with children, a combination of film and wax layer often offers the most durability.

I use transparent furniture protective films from the hardware store. They are unobtrusive and provide very good protection against scratches. It is important that they can be removed without leaving any adhesive residue. I have avoided wax because it can quickly leave a greasy film.

I can confirm that. A few months ago, I tried a clear varnish—it looked good at first, but shortly after, cracks and unsightly spots appeared. Since then, I prefer using furniture protective films, which work better.
