Hello everyone, I am currently considering the best way to care for Billy shelves, especially those made of wood and metal, which are very popular with many people. I am particularly interested in how to keep the shelf in good condition for as long as possible without damaging the surface, and whether you prefer certain cleaning products or maintenance methods. Are there differences depending on the material combination (wooden shelves vs. wood-metal combinations)? Also, how does regular maintenance affect the load capacity? I would appreciate your practical experiences and tips.

Hello DANDO, your question is really important because with furniture like Billy shelves, you can quickly notice how maintenance affects their durability.

I have one at home myself that I bought five years ago. For cleaning, I usually use a damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap—nothing harsh, so the wood surface doesn’t get damaged.

Yes, I pay special attention to the metal parts because rust can form quickly if they get wet. That’s why I regularly wipe the metal surfaces with a dry cloth and avoid splashes of oil-based cleaners on the metal areas.

It’s not always easy to do everything correctly, but I’ve developed a routine that gives me confidence. If you like, I can share more details about cleaning products.

Hello, I keep it simple: regularly wipe with a dry cloth, avoid using harsh cleaners. For wood, use a special wood care product, but apply it sparingly. Keep metal dry with dry cloths to prevent rust.

Hello DANDO and all Billy fans 🙂

I agree with Joe52: gentle care is essential. A small tip I always like to use is a slightly damp cloth with a little drop of olive oil for the wood. It might sound odd, but it gives the wood a nice shine while protecting it at the same time. Always use sparingly, or it can become greasy.

Exactly! Especially when things get damp, my rule is to dry quickly.

Care is not just maintenance, but also a bit of love for the furniture... it’s fun when done right! 🙂

I always wonder about the durability of cleaning and care products in the long term.

It would be interesting to know whether mild cleaning agents or occasional oiling leave any lasting effects over time.

From a technical perspective, I would always recommend following the manufacturer’s guidelines, as excessive care or using the wrong oils could damage the sealant. Can anyone share reliable experience or studies that show whether regular oiling of Billy-style shelves is actually beneficial or even counterproductive?

Hello everyone, I would like to add some information regarding the maintenance effort for Billy shelves.

Billy shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating or veneered wood, which significantly affects the cleaning method.

For melamine-coated surfaces, I recommend mild water-based cleaning agents and advise against abrasive or alkaline cleaners. A slightly damp microfiber cloth is usually sufficient.

For veneered wood, avoid excessive moisture as it can cause swelling. Additionally, special wood care products can help protect the wood without making the surface sticky.

Metal parts should be kept dry since delicate paint or anodized coatings protect against rust. If you already have rust on your metal parts, you might consider using a rust-resistant paint.

In summary: gentle cleaning, no harsh chemicals, and care depends on the surface type. I hope this clarifies things a bit more.
