Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase for my living room and, of course, I want to maintain it as best as possible so it stays looking good for a long time. My question is: What care is recommended for Billy bookcases in the living room?

I’m especially interested in how to clean the surface properly, which products I should use to avoid scratches and discoloration, and whether there are any special care methods that can protect or refresh the material.

I have read that some people use wood care oil, others swear by simple furniture polish, and others recommend just dry or damp cloths without any additives.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

I would simply wipe the Billy shelf with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the surface. For scratches, a furniture touch-up marker matching the color can sometimes help.

For the care of the Billy shelves from the living room, I recommend the following procedure: The IKEA Billy shelf is mainly made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating. This surface is resistant to moisture but should still not be wiped wet.

It is recommended to use a slightly damp microfiber cloth without aggressive cleaning agents. Avoid abrasive cleaners or ammonia-based products, as these can damage the surface.

Scratches can be repaired with special furniture markers available from IKEA or furniture stores. Regular treatment with furniture wax or oil is not necessary and could damage the surface.

If you have stains, it is best to clean them with mild dish soap and water. Afterwards, dry the surface to prevent water damage.

Wow, Billy shelves are really great pieces of furniture, I love the flexibility! 🙂

I always clean mine with just a damp cloth and a mild cleaning agent – it works perfectly! And if there’s ever a scratch, just touch it up with the appropriate paint marker, it looks like new again!

It’s also important not to use overly wet cloths, or the edges might swell – that would be a pity!

So: dust regularly and clean carefully, then you’ll enjoy them for a long time. Good luck to you all!

That’s right! Don’t worry, small imperfections like that aren’t a disaster: with a little care, the shelves will look like new!

I personally often use a mix of lukewarm water and a few drops of dish soap – this cleans the surface gently without stressing the material.

A tip: always wipe in the direction of the grain, and finish by polishing with a dry cloth. This keeps the shine intact – and the living room looks really stylish! ;-)

Thanks for the explanation, that already helps a lot!

Can anyone share advice on storage or protection against UV exposure? I have a quite sunny living area and am concerned that the shelf might fade or that the surface could become brittle.

Are there any maintenance products that can prevent this, or should I rather pay attention to specific measures when placing it?
