ᐅ What common installation errors occur with IKEA PLATSA units?

klaarwedHello everyone,
I would like to start a focused discussion on the topic: What common assembly mistakes occur with IKEA Platsa?
I’ve noticed that during the assembly of the modular wardrobe series PLATSA, there are some recurring issues that, in my view, stem from frequent errors made while putting it together. I’m particularly interested in the typical mistakes less experienced DIYers make, but also those that happen repeatedly even when following the instructions—such as due to poor fit or unclear steps in the assembly guide.
Could you please describe specifically which assembly errors you or others have observed, and maybe also share tips on how to avoid these mistakes? I look forward to detailed responses, preferably with explanations of the consequences of each error. Thank you!

Hello klarwed,
very good topic, since PLATSA is practical but its assembly can be tricky. I’ll summarize my experience:
- Incorrect orientation of the panels: Many people turn the side wooden parts the wrong way, causing the drill holes not to line up.
- Using the wrong screws: The instructions often mention different types of screws; mixing these up can affect stability.
- Screws or dowels not properly countersunk: This leads to wobbly edges and uneven joints.
- Mounting hinges without precise measuring: Doors quickly end up crooked.
To avoid these issues, I recommend carefully sorting the parts before starting, double-checking the drill hole alignments before screwing, and using clamps if possible to secure edges. Also, using a cordless screwdriver with torque control helps prevent damage.
The key is to work step-by-step and really read the instructions section by section, not rush through them. This greatly reduces potential errors.

I really like the PLATSA series, but yes, assembling it can sometimes be frustrating! 🤗
What I often notice is that beginners either don’t screw the screws in deep enough or they tighten them too much and end up crushing the wood. This quickly causes unpleasant dents.
Don’t be discouraged! Every mistake is a learning experience, and with some patience, the furniture will be very sturdy and look great! Just take a deep breath and go step by step!

Hello klarwed,
to thoroughly address this topic, I would like to highlight some technical details that often go unnoticed but can cause critical errors during the PLATSA assembly process.
First: The tongue and groove joints between the panels play a key role. If the tongue is not fully inserted or the groove is damaged, the connections won’t fit properly, and over time, stresses can build up that may cause the screw holes to tear out.
Second: The plastic connectors (Minifix) used in PLATSA are sometimes smaller than those in other furniture. If they are installed either too gently or too forcefully, they might not engage properly, or the furniture may lose necessary tension. I recommend assembling these precisely according to the instructions using the appropriate tool, but without applying excessive force.
Third: The attachment of the back panel is another weak point. It is crucial for the overall stability of the unit. If the nails or screws are driven in crookedly or if the back panel is not fully flush, the cabinet may wobble later on.
What exactly does your assembly process look like? Are you using all the included assembly aids and working on a level surface? Such details can help identify possible errors.

Incorrect orientation of the panels: Many people turn the side wooden parts the wrong way, which causes the drill holes not to align.I see it differently. I believe the biggest issue is that IKEA relies too much on mass production and designs the instructions too minimally. Sure, incorrect orientation is annoying, but without precise guidance, confusion is inevitable. PLATSA could be a great system if they didn’t handle the documentation so carelessly.
I think customers are often expected to take too much responsibility. Not everyone is an experienced DIYer – more support is needed.
