HerodeoHello everyone, I’m currently planning the furnishing of my small apartment and looking for suitable wardrobes. The Ikea Pax is quite popular, but it is often quite large and sometimes not ideal for very tight or small spaces. So my question is: What alternatives to the Ikea Pax are available specifically for small rooms, that are flexible in size, still offer good storage space, and ideally are customizable or modular? I want to avoid the wardrobe overwhelming the room or appearing too bulky. Maybe someone knows smart solutions, slim models, or other brands that have proven effective in small rooms? Thanks in advance for your tips!
That’s a really good question, as I’ve experienced myself how difficult it can be to organize everything neatly in a small room. For me, modular solutions where I only buy the components I actually need were very helpful – they save space and money. I also like open clothes rails with shelves around them because they create a more airy feel. Sometimes this also adds a bit more sense of space. How large is your room exactly?

How large is your room exactly? Thanks for your question! The room is about 10 square meters (108 square feet), rectangular, and the wall where the wardrobe is supposed to be is approximately 180 cm (71 inches) wide. The ceiling height is around 2.50 m (8 ft 2 in). Good storage solutions are important to me, but not at the expense of the feeling of space. I had also considered open clothes rails, but sometimes they can quickly look untidy if everything isn’t perfectly arranged. In general, I prefer something that encourages organization.
Hi, in a small space like yours, the following alternatives to the Ikea Pax are worth considering:
- Sliding door wardrobes with a narrower depth (e.g., 35-40 cm (14-16 inches) instead of 60 cm (24 inches))
- Modular systems like "String Furniture" or "USM Haller" that you can customize flexibly
- Wardrobes with built-in dressers that save space
- Open shelving combined with clothing rods for a fresh look and good visibility
It is important to carefully measure the space beforehand to ensure the wardrobe fits. Open designs are great if you can keep things tidy daily; otherwise, doors are a better option.
If you like, I can also provide some examples I personally recommend for small rooms.
