Hello everyone,
I have noticed some water stains on my IKEA KALLAX shelf for a while now, which don’t come off easily despite careful cleaning. The shelf is in the living room, a typical area where occasional water rings appear, possibly caused by spilled glasses. I am especially interested in effective and gentle methods or home remedies for removing water stains on the original white-coated KALLAX surfaces.
I want to avoid damaging the surface, roughening the finish, or causing discoloration. Has anyone experienced this issue and can share tips on suitable cleaning products or home remedies?
I’m looking forward to hearing your recommended approaches, thanks in advance!

Hello Uspe31,

I’m unfortunately familiar with the problem of water stains on KALLAX shelves from personal experience – it’s really frustrating, especially when you’re trying to keep the surface well maintained. I once tried wiping the water stains with dish soap, which only helped to a certain extent, and some stains remained visible.

Sometimes I find it discouraging because you think the stains aren’t noticeable, but when the light hits them, you can see those ugly white rings. How long have your stains been there? Especially with older stains, the material often reacts oddly. I also experimented for a while with home remedies like vinegar and lemon juice, but I’m quite unsure whether these might damage the surface.

I’d be happy if someone here has a gentle and lasting solution – maybe we can encourage each other to tackle this problem effectively! 🙂

Interesting question. I would like to point out that water stains on painted or coated surfaces are often caused by a chemical imbalance on the surface, which leads to a whitish haze.

In my opinion, this is risky because vinegar and citric acid can damage the surface, especially on plastic coatings like those typically found on KALLAX. Such remedies may remove stains temporarily but can cause damage in the long term.

I would recommend looking specifically for products suitable for wood or plastic coatings, ideally labeled as “paint-safe” or “furniture-friendly.”

For discussion: Does anyone have reliable experience with common furniture polishes or special cleaning wipes for KALLAX? I ask because anecdotes often sound convincing, but scientifically based recommendations are lacking.

Hello Uspe31,

I’d like to address your issue in more detail – water stains on KALLAX surfaces can indeed be quite persistent since the surface is usually melamine-coated. This means it is generally resistant to moisture, but water stains are often caused by lime or mineral deposits accumulating on the surface.

Here is my suggested approach:

1. Dry cleaning: First, gently wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth to remove any loose particles.

2. Mild cleaning solution: Use a mixture of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. It’s important to use only a small amount of liquid and wring the cloth well to avoid soaking the surface.

3. Gentle stain removal: If the stains are still visible, you can try carefully using some vinegar essence, but only apply it to a soft cloth and never spray it directly onto the shelf. The vinegar acts as a descaler but should be wiped off immediately with a damp cloth to prevent damage.

4. Aftercare: Finally, polish with a dry cloth. For more stubborn, dried-in stains, a special plastic cleaner designed for melamine-coated furniture, available at hardware stores, might be helpful.

One more tip: Avoid abrasive cleaners or strong alkaline products, as these can damage the coating.

Could you please let us know how old the stains are and whether they are large water deposits or just small rings? 🙂

It’s great to see so many useful tips gathered here already! 🙂

I once tried to remove water stains from my KALLAX using toothpaste—yes, really! Just a small amount on a damp cloth, gently rubbed in, then wiped off with a clean cloth. For me, this worked quite well on light stains. Toothpaste contains fine abrasive particles that can effectively tackle discoloration without damaging the surface too much. But you have to be very careful not to rub too hard!

I have also tried glass cleaner on stubborn stains, but I’m not sure if that’s really recommended…

I’m curious if anyone knows of other unusual methods or if toothpaste has helped anyone else here in a similar way!

Toothpaste sometimes works.

Alternatively: microfiber cloth with lukewarm water, then plastic polish (for furniture).

No harsh chemicals, no abrasive sponges.
