Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to use an Ikea Kallax shelving unit at home for storage, but without doors. My question is: What disadvantages or problems might arise from using the Kallax without doors? How does this affect cleanliness, organization, and appearance? Are there any practical tips I should keep in mind if I decide not to install doors, and is it advisable from a functional or aesthetic perspective?

I would appreciate any experiences or advice!

Hello Marco33,

I have recently started using my Kallax without doors, and what I noticed is that it looks more open and lighter, which I also find visually appealing. However, after a while, I realized that dust accumulates much faster in the open compartments than I initially thought. Especially when storing items that aren’t used regularly, this means more frequent cleaning for me now.

For me, this dust issue is definitely a drawback. Also, it can sometimes look a bit messy if you don’t organize the contents very carefully. Doors hide everything and create a tidier appearance.

So my advice is: if you choose the doorless option, make sure to stay mostly organized and maybe use boxes or baskets to keep things from looking too chaotic. 🙂 This also makes cleaning easier.

What kind of items do you mainly want to store in the Kallax?

To address the question regarding practical disadvantages of the Kallax without doors, here are some points that frequently arise during use:

1. Protection from dust and dirt: Open Kallax shelves do not provide protection against dust accumulation, which often results in increased cleaning efforts, especially for items stored for a long time.

2. Visual tidiness: Without doors, the shelves are always visible. This can affect the overall room appearance if the contents are inconsistent or items are stored untidily.

3. Noise: Using boxes in open compartments can cause rattling sounds when the boxes are moved, which doors can usually prevent more reliably.

4. Load capacity: The absence of doors does not affect the load-bearing capacity, but additional support mechanisms sometimes integrated in closed units with doors are missing.

5. Storage design: Without doors, Kallax offers more flexibility in using various containers, such as baskets, open boxes, or books, which can be advantageous depending on individual usage.

Staubproblematik ist für mich ein klarer Nachteil.

I can confirm that dust protection is the biggest disadvantage.

Ultimately, the decision depends on the location of use and personal preferences.

I would like to raise some critical points here as well:

The question is whether omitting doors always makes sense without carefully considering the intended use and the room itself. Doors not only protect from dust but also provide a certain level of privacy and a sense of order, since everything is not constantly on display.

Can you guarantee that you will keep the storage space tidy at all times? Or are you someone whose space tends to get messy quickly? Also, how important is the possibility for you to decorate the shelf attractively? If functionality is your only concern, the doorless option can certainly offer advantages, such as quick access and flexible use.

What I often miss here are concrete figures or studies on durability and cleaning costs. Are there any experiences related to this? Otherwise, it quickly remains a matter of personal impression.

In summary, I advocate for a careful assessment of your needs and possibly a combination approach: installing doors only on the lower compartments or keeping selected areas closed.
