I am planning to use an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a tool storage rack in my workshop. I am particularly interested in the load capacity of the individual compartments. Does anyone have experience with how much weight a single KALLAX cube can hold when fully loaded with tools?
I am mainly referring to hand tools such as wrenches, drills, cordless screwdrivers, and similar equipment. It is also important for me to know if it makes a difference whether the shelf is mounted on the wall or stands freely.
Are there any tips for reinforcing the unit to increase its load-bearing capacity, or is it already stable enough as is?
I would really appreciate your assessments and feedback!

Hey Kristian38,
I actually use my KALLAX as a tool shelf and I’m really impressed! 🙂 The load capacity is quite good; one compartment easily holds 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) of tools without any warping. The important thing is that the shelf stands firmly on the floor and, ideally, is secured to the wall. That way, it doesn’t wobble at all!
If you want to store heavy equipment like drills in it, it’s best to distribute the weight across several compartments.
Tip: I also added small metal brackets inside to relieve stress on the wood. That gave the shelf a serious boost in stability.
It’s great to upgrade a simple IKEA piece like that! Good luck 🙂

Just as a critical remark: Ikea specifies a maximum load of about 13 kg (29 lbs) per compartment for the KALLAX unit, as far as I know.
This is because the material is not solid wood but rather a wood fiberboard with a melamine coating. At excessive loads, it can sag or even swell if moisture is involved.
I recommend carefully considering which tools you want to store inside and determining their weight in advance.
That may be the case, but it exceeds the manufacturer's specifications – whether it is safe and durable over time is another question.
It might be worth reinforcing the shelf with additional strips or a back panel reinforcement. Also, better not to load it fully all at once, but rather distribute the weight.

Hello Kristian38,
I can only agree with Jamalli that the KALLAX shelf has a certain load limit per individual compartment. The manufacturer’s specification of 13 kg (29 lbs) is more of a guideline, but with reasonable use, the system often holds more.
Important: Make sure not only to place the shelf freely but also to securely attach it to the wall. This prevents tipping and reduces stress on the material.
For reinforcement, you can install special metal brackets or additional wooden strips inside the compartments. Also, a plywood back panel provides more stability and prevents lateral bending.
It’s best to distribute power tools and heavier equipment across several compartments. I have been using such a KALLAX shelf in my workshop for 2 years and am satisfied with it.
If you plan to load the shelf more heavily, a metal workshop rack might be the more durable alternative.

Ikea itself specifies a maximum load of about 13 kg (29 lbs) per compartment for the KALLAXExactly, and there are several practical tests online that show this should be taken fairly seriously.
Another aspect is long-term load: wood fiber materials can deform over time under weight.
I once heard of someone who tried to store a heavy metal saw in a KALLAX compartment – it ended with the shelf breaking through.
My advice: tools that are very heavy and/or frequently taken out might be better placed on another shelf or in a steel box.
Of course, you can modify the shelf to install stronger boards, but that’s quite a different level of effort. If you want to stay flexible, KALLAX is better suited for lighter tools or boxes.
