The question of whether liquids are a concern can be clearly answered from a technical perspective: Kallax shelves are mostly made of particle board or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) coated with melamine resin. This protective layer is water-repellent but not completely waterproof.
This means that spilled or leaking liquids, if not removed quickly, can penetrate the surface. As a result, the material will swell in the affected areas, which not only affects the appearance but also reduces the stability of the panels.
For use as a bar, I therefore recommend:
- Generally using protective films or covers on the shelves that are easy to clean.
- Always using coasters under bottles and glasses.
- Wiping up any liquids immediately.
Additionally, sealing the exposed edges could help, as these are particularly vulnerable.

One additional point: High-proof spirits contain alcohol that does not damage the protective coating. More problematic are sugary or colored mixed drinks and syrups, which tend to be stickier due to their consistency and ingredients and are harder to clean up if spilled.
Therefore, it is important to keep bar surfaces easily accessible to quickly clean up spills. It might also help to place a thin glass sheet on the Kallax unit; this maintains the appearance while making cleaning easier.
