Hello everyone,

I made some mistakes while assembling my Kallax shelf, which I now want to correct. Specifically, the shelves were installed incorrectly, and some of the mounting brackets are misaligned, making the shelf less functional. Since the system is supposed to be modular and flexible, I’m wondering: What is the best way to undo assembly errors with Kallax without damaging the wood or connectors? Are there any particular tips or tools you would recommend for taking the components apart and readjusting them? I would really appreciate any advice or experiences you could share!

It is best to carefully loosen the screws rather than forcefully pull them out. For the plastic parts, a thin screwdriver can help to pry them gently; work slowly if possible.

Hello Minle60,

Your concern is understandable because although Kallax is modular, the connections are designed to be quite sturdy, so they should be handled carefully when disassembling. In general, I recommend first checking all screws and wooden dowels and systematically loosening them. It’s best to use an appropriate Phillips or Torx screwdriver, depending on the type of screws used.

That’s an important point. The dowels are often made of wood or plastic and can break if handled too roughly. Once one side is separated, you can use small levering tools like a plastic wedge to gently help separate the parts.

It is also important to properly align all connections during reassembly to avoid damage later on.

If you’re unsure about any step, I’d be happy to provide more detailed guidance.

I would like to take the opportunity to address your case in more detail, Minle60. The Kallax units are standardized, but the connection methods can vary slightly depending on the production year. Many of the shelves use wooden dowels and metal screws.

First, you should prepare your work surface well, using a soft cloth or cardboard underneath to prevent scratches.

For this, it’s best to follow these steps:

1. Visually inspect all connection points: identify screws, dowels, and any pressed-in connectors.
2. Slowly unscrew the screws completely using the appropriate tool. It’s recommended to use a cordless drill with torque control or a good hand screwdriver to avoid stripping or rounding off the screws.
3. Once the screws are removed, wooden dowels often become visible. Carefully loosen these with a pointed but not too sharp tool (such as a blunt chisel or plastic wedge). Avoid using force to prevent breaking the dowels, as they are important for reconnecting.
4. Let the disassembled parts dry for a while if there is any moisture or glue residue.
5. Before reassembling, it’s advisable to use wood glue if necessary, as well as lightly sanding the connection areas to ensure the shelf stands stable once reassembled.

If the dowels are damaged, it is recommended to replace them, since they contribute significantly to stability.

Could you specify what kind of assembly mistakes you encountered with the shelves and hanging parts? That way I can tailor the instructions even more precisely.

Can you be more specific about what kind of assembly mistakes occurred with the shelves and hangers?

Specifically, some of the shelves were not properly snapped into place, and on one of the side frames I inserted a screw incorrectly, causing it to be angled in the wood and making the part appear bent. This creates tension during assembly, and I’m afraid that adjusting it too forcefully might damage the wood.

I only have a basic Phillips screwdriver available, but I thought that should generally be enough. It seems especially critical with the screws on the side frame.

Would you recommend loosening only the screws first and then trying to straighten the part mechanically, or would it be better to fully disassemble everything?

Also, do you have any tips on correcting the bending without causing visible damage? I really want to restore everything as gently as possible.
