Hello,
I know this is a home construction forum, but I am at a loss and hope to get some helpful advice.
For a few days now, there has been a smell of stale beer/marijuana in the bedroom of my partner and me. We have searched everywhere and found nothing. It is absolutely certain that the cause is not related to these substances.
Now, I smelled the walls (sounds strange, I know) and noticed that a slanted wall smells strongly of this. It is the "sun wall" on the upper floor. The house is about 70 years old.
What could be causing this? Do we need to open up the wall? Could it be mold or maybe a decomposing animal?
I am at a loss.
Thank you in advance!

It’s also strange that in the evening (just like now) there is no smell, but this morning there definitely was... Yes, it’s exactly the same for me! I hope we can still identify the causes. If it smells like that again tomorrow morning, I’ll go sniff around the tree...

If there’s a smell in the room, try walking around to see if it’s stronger somewhere.
In the corners, from the electrical outlets, the tilted window,
on the ceiling,
it has to be coming from somewhere. I’ve already tried all that, even crawling on the floor with my nose close to it... Luckily nobody can see me here. The dog is starting to wonder if I’ve gone crazy with all this sniffing.
The wall smells like a wall, the floor like a floor, the dog like a dog... I’m more suspicious of the patio door or that the smell comes from there (although all the windows in the house are triple glazed and only 5 years old). But I see that as the biggest weak point.
I also suspected the solid oak parquet under the laminate, but that doesn’t really fit with the smell only coming and going depending on the weather, right? Anyway, I’ll sniff around the baseboards again.

that it only smells occasionally due to weather conditionsIt’s the same here in the half-timbered house with old oak beams. A few times a year, when it gets warmer outside. But only the one in the hallway... I would have described it as “esoteric,” since our previous tenants were into that kind of thing. But it could also be some chemical or biological reaction to something in the air or a specific humidity/temperature, or something like that.
Anyway, I definitely don’t have any strange trees in the natural garden...

The house used to be a machine house and was converted into a residence in 1997. It’s not timber-framed; the exterior walls are made of hollow concrete blocks. But tomorrow I’ll climb the ladder and sniff the beam too.K

Nowhere smells like the air in that room!Similar topics
