Hello,
I know this is a home construction forum, but I am at a loss and hope to get some helpful advice.
For a few days now, there has been a smell of stale beer/marijuana in the bedroom of my partner and me. We have searched everywhere and found nothing. It is absolutely certain that the cause is not related to these substances.
Now, I smelled the walls (sounds strange, I know) and noticed that a slanted wall smells strongly of this. It is the "sun wall" on the upper floor. The house is about 70 years old.
What could be causing this? Do we need to open up the wall? Could it be mold or maybe a decomposing animal?
I am at a loss.

Thank you in advance!

Stale beer smells flat and slightly musty. Right now it smells sweetish.

I also suspect some dead animal remains. Dead animals smell sweetish, the fur smells musty. Eventually, the carcass smells musty...
Makes sense!

Thanks!
That sounds reasonable... We’ll check the attic again; maybe from there we can see if it’s “just” a dead marten or a rat.
Best regards and thanks for the idea 🙂

Be sure to bring a lighter. You might find the previous owner's grass stash 😉

Personally, I would go up wearing a face mask. Honestly!

Yes, and not just a face mask (FFP3 mask), but also gloves and safety goggles. Possibly even a full-body suit—I call those white suits “full-body condoms.” Rodents often carry hantavirus. My daughter had it once, and it’s no joke! If things go badly, it can be fatal.

The virus is transmitted especially through dust and rodent droppings. As I said, after going through that experience once, I never want to go through it again. Thankfully, the doctors were able to diagnose it very quickly back then.

Disposable protective suit, please 😉
At first, it’s enough to just take a look inside with a flashlight. If there’s anything there, I would call an exterminator or a crime scene cleaner :p
