Hello,
I know this is a home construction forum, but I am at a loss and hope to get some helpful advice.
For a few days now, there has been a smell of stale beer/marijuana in the bedroom of my partner and me. We have searched everywhere and found nothing. It is absolutely certain that the cause is not related to these substances.
Now, I smelled the walls (sounds strange, I know) and noticed that a slanted wall smells strongly of this. It is the "sun wall" on the upper floor. The house is about 70 years old.
What could be causing this? Do we need to open up the wall? Could it be mold or maybe a decomposing animal?
I am at a loss.
Thank you in advance!

We have always used chocolate as bait. If there was a hollow chocolate figure left over from Christmas or Easter, we would form it into a ball by hand and press it firmly into the wooden mouse trap so the mouse would have a hard time getting it out. This worked really well. The plastic traps (e.g., Supercat) didn’t work for us, though. We didn’t use live traps, so we have no experience with those.

Stefanie D.16 Apr 2024 19:51Hello everyone, here’s another update... The little shrew finally did get caught in the lethal trap, and since then it’s been quiet. Meanwhile, the bees have moved back into the porch floorboards and may have helped me drive away more mice, or maybe there was only one after all.
Since I have had bees there every summer, they could also be the reason why the problem only lasted until early summer and why there was no more smell afterward.

However, the guest seems to have moved out, as there has been no noise for several days. This has been the pattern every year so far. We also suspect it was something bigger than a mouse because the sounds were noticeably heavier. This year, it was even heard once in the sloping ceiling area of our bedroom. Well, I’m curious when the smell will completely go away. You only notice the smell when entering the room. Once inside, the smell fades quickly. The odor also stays confined to this room; even with the door open, nothing spreads into the hallway. It remains quite strange.
