ᐅ The wall suddenly smells like marijuana and stale beer.

Hello,
I know this is a home construction forum, but I am at a loss and hope to get some helpful advice.
For a few days now, there has been a smell of stale beer/marijuana in the bedroom of my partner and me. We have searched everywhere and found nothing. It is absolutely certain that the cause is not related to these substances.
Now, I smelled the walls (sounds strange, I know) and noticed that a slanted wall smells strongly of this. It is the "sun wall" on the upper floor. The house is about 70 years old.
What could be causing this? Do we need to open up the wall? Could it be mold or maybe a decomposing animal?
I am at a loss.

Thank you in advance!

Hmm, I would guess it’s the eco-insulation layer. When installing it, I didn’t notice any smell either, but it appeared later. Especially when the sun shone on the laminate floor.
I suspect there needs to be a specific combination of temperature and air (or ground) humidity for the odor to be released.

I’ll take another look at it tomorrow and place a piece of it in another room and also out in the open in the living room. The storage room has no window, so maybe that’s why there’s no smell.
I’m not sure if the smell only appeared after the flooring was installed. Back then I still smoked, especially in the living room – that might have masked it.

Here’s an update: currently, there is no smell at all… This morning, only a very faint one if you know what to smell for.

The floors have been here for 24 years, and we have lived here for 15. I doubt it’s caused by those panels (if such panels are even present).

I’m curious whether and when the smell will return tomorrow.
I’ll keep you posted…

Good night

Then you would expect to smell something on the floor during that time as well, but there is no odor there.

Oh, and there has never been any smoking here over all these years ☺️

I just managed to pinpoint something... I was lying on the floor sniffing around the patio door. It definitely smells like it's coming from there, but I’m not sure exactly what it is yet... I even found that the silicone in the bottom corner has a slight crack, and there’s a draft coming through—you can actually feel a slight breeze. The curtain is hanging in front of it, so you don’t notice it.
Now the only question is what exactly is causing such a strong smell.
Maybe the foam used during the window installation?! I will check from the outside tomorrow.

So... Since I couldn’t stop thinking about it, I just lay down on the veranda floor outside. The smell definitely comes from underneath, from that corner. A few meters away, there is no smell. The veranda is made of WPC decking boards, with air underneath, and below that, partly concrete and partly gravel. Back then, there were bricks on top, which we removed about 6 years ago before building the terrace with WPC. Maybe we exposed something that smells like this, or somehow something strange is growing underneath. Now the only question is WHAT. Every now and then a mouse runs underneath, but no one has been running under there recently, so wouldn’t we notice the smell at other times besides spring?
