Hi everyone,

We want to organize some clutter in our attic and are looking for a simple and affordable shelving system. The attic has no knee wall and a roof slope of 27°. The shelf should be placed along the roof slope. Does anyone have an idea of something easy to buy off the shelf? Of course, the shelving doesn’t have to fit perfectly 🙂

Thanks!

Best regards,

Yes, but that’s exactly the point. Something like this is completely over the top for a storage area.

If you have sloping ceilings upstairs or under the stairs, fine. But in the attic, it feels like a waste of money. Unless you can do it yourself, but even then—the cost of the materials alone!

Heavy-duty shelving is really unbeatable. I’ve thought it over again. Even compared to shelf boards fixed directly to the joists with brackets or wooden battens, at 5 EUR per board, you have to manage that first. With shelf boards, brackets (or battens), and screws, you can quickly end up at 10 EUR per board.

And it’s not even certain whether you’re allowed to put that much load on the joists in the first place...

The question is also whether you truly need the full depth of the space. We only covered about 20 sqm (215 sq ft) in the middle with floorboards, and even that is a lot of space—we definitely do not need that much.

When I look at the boxes still stacked up to the ceiling in our hallway, as well as the third bedroom that’s filled with tools and... stuff, plus the utility room full of laundry bags and the part of the basement storage I still have outside, we’d probably need about 30 m2 (320 sq ft) of storage space with tall shelving if we wanted it all organized and accessible.

Of course, we could sort out and get rid of at least half, but I just can’t quite convince my wife of that...

Well, the tools and stuff are mine. But we still need those for the house, obviously... 😉

You probably don’t want to store your tools on the floor, do you?

That may be true.
In my case, the attic is finished and used as a guest room, so I planned according to the view.
And in the center, there is only about 50cm (20 inches) of standing height—if I place a standard half-height shelf there, I can barely move around.
That’s also how I understood it from the original poster:

I simply have the “little problem” that my attic isn’t very deep. Meaning, if I place a shelf too far forward, it quickly reduces the walking space.

You can see here: the sliding door at the back is definitely not 2m (6 ft 7 in) high, but more like 1.70m (5 ft 7 in)…

Bright attic with sloping walls, wooden floor, railing, and construction tools (blue bag) in the room.

Well, actually, all non-electric tools will be stored there. Or later on in the garden shed.
