Hello everyone,
I am considering fitting my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with special caster assemblies to make it more flexible and mobile. However, I have a question: Which caster assemblies are really suitable for the KALLAX so that the unit remains stable while still being movable?
I am not only referring to the load capacity of the casters themselves but also how they should be mounted to the shelving to prevent tipping hazards or wobbliness. Are there proven solutions that work well with the relatively lightweight but delicate frame of the KALLAX?
I would appreciate any experiences, product recommendations, or tips on special mounting methods. Thanks in advance!

Wheels with a diameter of at least 50mm (2 inches) and a locking brake are suitable for KALLAX.
The installation is best done with a sturdy base plate or with appropriate adapter plates for the cabinet material. Screws directly into the bottom are not ideal; it is better to use a wooden board underneath for reinforcement.

Which caster constructions work really well for the KALLAX, so that the shelf is both stable and mobile? That’s a great question! 🙂
I would recommend using casters with rubber or TPU tread wheels, which not only roll quietly but also provide good grip, preventing the shelf from rolling away when it shouldn’t.

Better to have a wooden board underneath for reinforcement. Exactly, the shelf alone can sometimes be a bit unstable for casters. A small board as a base stabilizes it both visually and structurally – and also gives you a solid surface to attach the casters to.Tip: If you want to match the color, you can simply paint or laminate the board before installing it. It also gives the whole setup a nice finishing touch! :-)

Are there proven solutions compatible with the relatively lightweight but delicate body of the KALLAX?From a technical perspective, I recommend:
1. Casters with a minimum diameter of 50-60 mm (2-2.4 inches) and a load capacity of 25-35 kg (55-77 lbs) each.
2. Lockable casters to securely fix the shelving unit in place.
3. A reinforced base, such as an MDF board, attached to the underside of the unit to prevent pressure marks or damage from direct screwing.
The KALLAX panels have a plastic coating and are not made of solid wood thickness, so reinforcement is essential.
Depending on the intended use (many books, decorations, etc.), the overall weight can increase significantly, making stabilization crucial.
