Hello everyone,

I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen and am now working on optimizing the drawers a bit. The issue is that while the drawers are well made, they tend to close quite loudly and sometimes feel a bit jerky. I would like to know if there is a practical way to retrofit the Ikea Metod drawers so they close softly and quietly, without affecting their original function or stability.

I’m open to suggestions on products like dampers, special hinges, or technical tips that anyone has already tried. It would also be helpful to know how easy or complicated the retrofit is, and whether replacement parts or suitable accessories are available from Ikea.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Dipipe,

I can definitely help you with this. The issue of soft-closing Ikea Metod drawers is common. Here is a brief overview:

- Ikea offers "soft-close" drawer systems that you can choose when buying new. Retrofitting is not always easy because the dampers are usually integrated parts of the drawer slides.

- However, there are universal retrofit dampers (also called "soft-close dampers") that can be mounted on the side of the cabinet at drawer height. These are typically fixed with screws and slow down the closing motion.

- Important for retrofitting: there must be enough clearance between the drawer and the cabinet; otherwise, the damper can get stuck.

- Installation usually requires removing the drawer, precise marking, and screwing. Tip: try out which angle and position work best before mounting.

- Alternatively, there are special slides (e.g., from Häfele or Blum) equipped with a soft-close function – but this means buying new drawers and replacing the slides.

If you want, I can write you a step-by-step guide for retrofitting with these universal dampers.

Best regards,

I’ll add to KUDAISY’s overview:

- Universal damper upgrade kits are affordable and easy to retrofit, especially if the cabinet has enough clearance beside the drawer.
- Some users report that the dampers lose spring tension over time. In this case, I recommend branded products from Blum or Hettich, which are of higher quality and more durable.
- When installing, be sure to use screws that are not too long, otherwise you risk damaging the cabinet carcass.

- An alternative is replacing the entire Metod rails with versions that have integrated soft-close functionality. However, this is more complex and expensive.

In short: If you have the time and some DIY skills, retrofitting with damper kits can be quite effective. The lifespan can be extended by using well-made components.

Maybe you have the chance to provide the exact dimensions of your drawer system, then I can give you specific product recommendations.

If you want long-lasting satisfaction with a quiet drawer function, switching to soft-close drawers from Ikea is worthwhile. Although retrofitting is possible, it is usually not perfect. Simply replace them and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Hello KUDAISY, thanks for your offer, that would be very helpful. I’m especially interested in what exactly I should watch out for when positioning them so that the dampers gently slow the drawer and at the same time don’t get in the way. Are there common mistakes to avoid?

And one more question: Does the effort to retrofit vary depending on the drawer type in Ikea Metod kitchens, or can it generally be done the same way?

Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Yes, a frequent mistake is mounting the dampers too close to the front edge of the drawer. This causes them to close too early, reducing the damping effect.

- The best position is usually about 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) from the front panel
- Dampers should be installed parallel to the drawer side
- Threads and screws must be secured properly, otherwise the mechanism quickly loses effectiveness

Also, be sure to pay attention to the installation height of the damper so it doesn’t collide with the drawer slide.

For different Metod drawer types (e.g., with metal sides or solid wood fronts), the distance may vary, but the general rule is always to leave enough space for the damper.

Before installation, I would always remove the drawer, position the damper temporarily, and then mark the spot.
