Hello everyone,

I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen and am now working on optimizing the drawers a bit. The issue is that while the drawers are well made, they tend to close quite loudly and sometimes feel a bit jerky. I would like to know if there is a practical way to retrofit the Ikea Metod drawers so they close softly and quietly, without affecting their original function or stability.

I’m open to suggestions on products like dampers, special hinges, or technical tips that anyone has already tried. It would also be helpful to know how easy or complicated the retrofit is, and whether replacement parts or suitable accessories are available from Ikea.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you want to be sustainably satisfied with quiet drawer operation, switching to Ikea’s soft-close drawers is worth it. Retrofitting is possible but usually not perfect. Just replace them and be done.

Well, that sounds like the convenient professional option, but honestly – it shouldn’t be necessary to replace the entire drawer just because it lacks a soft-close feature. That’s overkill and creates unnecessary waste.

I do see a market for retrofit solutions that are smart and resource-efficient. Simply replacing Ikea’s plastic parts just to reduce noise isn’t a solution for me.

It’s better to approach retrofit work by looking at how it can be done with simple means and well-designed accessories, both in compliance with regulations and technically. Sustainability and functionality are not mutually exclusive.

I can understand NOAHSAU’s perspective.

For retrofitting Ikea Metod drawers with soft-close dampers, there are several technical points to consider:

- Most universal dampers are hydraulically damped and have a specific opening angle. Therefore, the correct installation angle is crucial for proper performance.
- For Metod drawers, it is important to ensure the side panels are not too narrow; otherwise, the damper will not fit.
- Proper mounting is usually done with screws at predefined heights, which can be determined using a metal bracket or a template.
- For long-term stability, I recommend pre-drilling the screw holes before fastening to avoid damaging the material.
- Buy high-quality dampers whenever possible, as cheaper models often have poor damping curves and a shorter lifespan.

Conclusion: With some planning, retrofitting can be done technically properly and may be more cost-effective and resource-efficient than a full replacement.

In addition to the previous explanations:

- When retrofitting soft-close dampers on Ikea Metod drawers, the maximum gap between the drawer side and the cabinet is crucial, as dampers require space.
- It is often advisable to check the drawer slide mechanism. Modern self-closing systems usually have this damper pre-installed; retrofitting is typically only practical if the Metod drawers feature full-extension slides with metal sides.
- Smaller drawer systems with wooden frames can only be retrofitted partially or not at all.
- Installation usually takes place on the side of the cabinet near the drawer opening; dampers must be adjustable to ensure optimal function.

Practical experience: Precise measuring and adjustment before drilling reduces incorrect installations, as re-drilling in thin cabinet wood can cause problems.

Therefore, while retrofitting is effective, it requires precise workmanship. However, the effort is worthwhile for increased convenience in everyday use.
