Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Billy shelf that I have been using for some time to store my books and a few decorative items. I have noticed that the screws can loosen over time. My specific question is: when is the ideal time to tighten the screws of a Billy shelf, and how often should this be done to maintain the stability of the shelf in the long term?

Does anyone have experience or recommendations regarding the frequency and method for retightening the screws? Are there differences between older and newer shelves or depending on the type of load?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Is it recommended to fully check and retighten all screws on the shelf, including those that are not directly load-bearing?

Yes, I generally recommend checking all screws. Even in apparently non-critical areas, materials can give way or loosen over time. This is especially sensible for shelves that have been in use for several years.

Which tool is best suited for retightening?

Usually, Phillips screwdrivers (PH2) are used. A good screwdriver with an ergonomic handle helps to work precisely and avoid over-tightening. If available, a torque wrench can also be used to tighten screws to the correct torque (around 2-3 Nm is usually sufficient).

Summary:
- A full check is advisable
- Use a screwdriver with the correct head
- Avoid over-tightening

This keeps the shelf safe and stable.

In addition to the question about tools: High-quality medium-sized Phillips screwdrivers (PH2) are suitable for retightening. Cheap tools often tend to round off the screw heads.

Also helpful: When retightening, proceed in small increments and avoid fully tightening the screw immediately. This helps protect the material and the threads.

Hello ladra45,

To summarize your question clearly: Screws on the Billy bookshelf should be checked after the first few weeks of use and then inspected regularly, about once a year, and tightened if necessary.

A common mistake is over-tightening, which can cause damage to the material. So it’s better to proceed carefully.

If the shelf is under heavy load or frequently moved, you can check more often to ensure everything is secure. If the shelf wobbles or makes noises, be sure to inspect it immediately.

Regarding tools: A good, properly fitting Phillips screwdriver with a firm grip is ideal.

I hope this helps you 🙂

Exactly, that’s the key point. Anyone who watches carefully doesn’t need to adjust according to the plan unnecessarily. This helps avoid needless screwing and damage.

The best advice remains: observe first, then intervene intentionally.
