Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Billy shelf that I have been using for some time to store my books and a few decorative items. I have noticed that the screws can loosen over time. My specific question is: when is the ideal time to tighten the screws of a Billy shelf, and how often should this be done to maintain the stability of the shelf in the long term?

Does anyone have experience or recommendations regarding the frequency and method for retightening the screws? Are there differences between older and newer shelves or depending on the type of load?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Good question!

Basically, IKEA furniture like the Billy shelf uses conventional fasteners that can loosen over time due to use, load, and material changes. I recommend checking the screws about every 6 months and tightening them if necessary—especially if the shelf is moved frequently or heavily loaded.

Procedure:
1. Empty the shelf
2. Evenly tighten the screws with a suitable screwdriver (do not overtighten, as the insert material may be plastic)
3. Check for squeaky or wobbly spots

A common mistake is overtightening, which can damage the threads. So, it’s better to use a bit less force than too much.

In summary: Check approximately every six months, or more often depending on use and load. This helps maintain stability.

I find the common recommendations for retightening Billy shelf screws a bit too conservative. In my opinion, it’s not necessary to adjust them every six months.

That’s too often. If you use your shelf normally and don’t move it around constantly, it’s not required. Under normal static load, the joints can hold for 1-2 years or longer without retightening.

It’s better to watch for signs—if something wobbles or the shelf creaks, then tighten the screws. Otherwise, constantly screwing them can actually weaken the joints.

My proposition: observe rather than tighten prophylactically all the time.

Additional information: The screws used in IKEA Billy shelves are typically round dowels and small screws that anchor into the particleboard material. This material has some flexibility, which can cause the screws to loosen over time.

Factors affecting the need to retighten:
- Load intensity: The heavier the load, the more likely the shelf will loosen.
- Movement: Frequent repositioning can loosen screws.

Recommendation based on material data and user experiences:
- Check and, if necessary, slightly retighten screws within the first 2-3 weeks after assembly.
- After that, inspect every 12 months.

If the shelf is only lightly loaded, longer intervals between checks are possible.

Important: Avoid overtightening, as this can permanently damage the connection.

I tighten my Billy shelves again after 4 weeks and then once a year. No more than that.

That is more than sufficient, especially if the shelf is not moved frequently.

Thanks for the previous answers!

One more question from my side: Is it recommended to check and tighten all the screws on the shelf completely, including those that are not directly load-bearing? Or is it sufficient to regularly inspect only the screws at the load-bearing points?

Also: Which tool is best suited for tightening? Some screws are quite small and delicate.
