Hello everyone,
I am considering using my IKEA KALLAX shelf as a wine rack and want to store the bottles safely and in an organized way. The classic KALLAX compartments are square and quite large, so I’m wondering what the best solution is to prevent the bottles from rolling around or getting damaged. The plan is to place the shelf in the kitchen or living room, where the temperature is not ideal for wine storage – so I’m also curious about options for adding suitable insulation or a removable divider.
How have you approached this? Have you used special shelves, holders, or other modifications to store the bottles securely and save space? I’m also interested in tips regarding stability, weight distribution, and protection from sunlight. I look forward to your experiences and ideas!

I also used a KALLAX unit as a wine rack, but with professional bottle holders that can be ordered online. These holders are designed to fit into the square compartments and securely hold each bottle, which makes the system particularly stable.
Please note:
- The typical load capacity of the shelf is about 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs) per compartment, which can be exceeded by a certain number of bottles.
- Therefore, securing the unit to the wall is essential.
My advice: Combining simple wooden bases with additional bottle holders provides good stability and a very attractive appearance.

I really like how many tips are being shared here.
I find that especially important – I once stored an entire batch of wine in a place that was too warm, and the quality quickly deteriorated. Maybe it’s an acceptable compromise if the KALLAX is used purely as a display shelf, but for longer storage, I’d find that too risky.
Do you have any tips on how to discreetly add a cooling function without making the shelf look like a wine cooler?

Do you have any tips on how to install a cooling function as unobtrusively as possible? One option is to attach small cooling pads or thermoelectric elements to the back of the shelf, which provide quiet cooling. A suitable ventilation system integrated into the furniture can also help. Of course, this requires considerable effort. For everyday use, however, well-ventilated, shaded locations are usually better than an expensive technical solution.

If you want to actively cool the shelf, it is essential to include condensation traps and ventilation; otherwise, damage to the furniture is unavoidable.
Overall, the KALLAX is more suitable for display and short-term storage. For long-term storage of high-quality wine, it is better to use professional wine refrigerators.
