Hello everyone,

I am planning to replace the shelves of my IKEA Billy bookcase and am looking for materials that are compatible and integrate well both visually and functionally with the existing unit.

My main concerns are easy installation, good load-bearing capacity, and durable surface finishes. What alternatives to the original Billy shelves do you know of? For example, are plywood, MDF boards with laminate finishes, glass, or even metal recommended?

It is also important to me whether I need any special mounting hardware for this or if using the standard Billy wall brackets will be sufficient.

I look forward to your experiences, especially tips on what to consider when replacing the shelves, such as material thickness, moisture resistance, or load capacity.

Thanks in advance!

Interesting discussion here!

I think many people underestimate how much the choice of materials also changes the style of the shelving.

I would even recommend metal sheets here if you like the industrial look.

Exactly, and I would even add: Limiting yourself to common materials like MDF or plywood wastes potential. For example, you can use thin, brushed aluminum panels, which not only look visually striking but are also extremely durable.

Of course, the effort is greater, and the mounting is not straightforward – but that’s what sets a mass-produced item apart from a genuine design piece.

If you want the shelving to be an eye-catcher, you should consider such alternatives.

What do you think? Is it too extravagant or actually an exciting approach?

What exactly do you plan to use the new shelves for? Books or decoration?

Thank you for the detailed answer! The shelf will mainly be used for books, but occasionally also for some decorative items and photo albums.

So the shelves definitely need to have good load-bearing capacity, ideally also some resistance to occasional spills (e.g., a glass of water).

I have access to a workshop and tools, so I can cut the boards myself, sand them, and possibly paint or seal them.

An important recommendation: When cutting, be sure to match the measurements exactly to the interior dimensions of the shelf and seal the edges to prevent the material from swelling.

I think that's important, especially with regard to moisture damage.

In my case, would you lean more towards plywood or MDF? Metal or glass seems a bit too unstable for everyday use.

Looking forward to more opinions!
