Hello everyone,

I am planning to replace the shelves of my IKEA Billy bookcase and am looking for materials that are compatible and integrate well both visually and functionally with the existing unit.

My main concerns are easy installation, good load-bearing capacity, and durable surface finishes. What alternatives to the original Billy shelves do you know of? For example, are plywood, MDF boards with laminate finishes, glass, or even metal recommended?

It is also important to me whether I need any special mounting hardware for this or if using the standard Billy wall brackets will be sufficient.

I look forward to your experiences, especially tips on what to consider when replacing the shelves, such as material thickness, moisture resistance, or load capacity.

Thanks in advance!

For most people, MDF with foil works well, is stable, and easy to cut.

Standard Billy brackets fit if the thickness is around 16 mm (0.6 inches).

I would only use glass if you can secure it properly, for safety reasons.

Regarding your project: The typical Billy shelves are designed for a panel thickness of 16 mm (5/8 inch), which affects the entire construction and load capacity. This means that materials significantly thicker or thinner may cause problems when attaching to the standard Billy drill holes and brackets.

16 mm (5/8 inch) thick MDF with a foil coating is indeed a very good alternative because it is easy to work with, offers a smooth surface, and is also cost-effective. However, it is important to note that MDF is not particularly moisture-resistant. For damp areas, it is better to use special moisture-resistant MDF variants or choose other materials.

Plywood panels are more robust and generally more resistant to moisture, which gives them an advantage over MDF, especially if you plan to use the Billy shelf in an entryway or basement. However, plywood panels are often thicker than 16 mm (5/8 inch), so adjustments may be necessary. You might need to slightly modify the fittings or use different brackets.

Glass shelves look attractive and elegant but have limited load-bearing capacity. Additionally, you will need special clips or mounts designed for glass. These usually do not fit the Billy shelf without modification. Furthermore, consider the risk of glass breaking under improper load, especially in households with children.

Regarding metal: Metal panels as shelves are uncommon for Billy units because the weight of the shelf and the associated effort for cutouts or fittings are disproportionate. Also, the shelf itself is limited by the wall mounting, so very heavy shelves do not provide an advantage.

A question: What exactly do you want to use the new shelves for? Books or decoration? This also influences the choice of material and thickness. It would also be helpful to know whether you have cutting and processing options yourself or if the shelves will be purchased ready-made.

This is really important. For heavy books, plywood panels are usually better because they are more stable.

If it’s just for decoration, MDF or even glass is sufficient.

I think it’s a bit overrated to insist on using original Billy brackets. If you have some basic DIY skills, you can use other mounting methods and create a much more personalized shelf.

I would even recommend metal panels if you like the industrial look. They are unbeatable in terms of stability, especially if they are not too thin. Of course, you’ll need to find different brackets, but that’s not rocket science. In my opinion, Billy shelves are often interpreted too rigidly and boringly.

Sure, you can spend a lot of time worrying about material thickness and mounting – but sometimes you just have to be brave and try something new. If you only stick to the standard options, you might miss out on some really cool possibilities.

As additional information: The Billy shelf is designed to support a maximum load of about 20 kg (44 lbs) per shelf surface under optimal conditions.

16 mm (5/8 inch) MDF boards are technically suitable and offer easy workability. MDF boards are mostly used for replacement shelves since they have a smooth surface and are easy to coat.

Plywood boards are more stable but are often thicker (e.g., 18 or 20 mm, 3/4 or 13/16 inch), which can make the original brackets unusable.

Alternatives include solid wood or painted plywood panels with appropriate mounting clips.

Glass looks premium but is less load-bearing and requires special supports.

An important recommendation: When cutting, make sure to precisely match the measurements to the interior dimensions of the shelf and seal the edges to prevent the material from swelling.

I also advise estimating the load capacity beforehand, depending on the intended use.
