Hello everyone,
I have noticed some paint scratches on my IKEA Billy bookcase that really bother me, as the shelf is painted white and the scratches are quite visible. The surface is painted, not laminated, so simply wiping it down does not help.
I am specifically looking for DIY tips to repair these paint scratches myself or at least reduce their visibility. What works well on white painted panels like this? Should I use special touch-up paint pens, polishing compounds, or home remedies?
It is also important to me that the solution lasts in the long term and does not leave the surface dull or blotchy. If anyone has experience with BILLY bookcases or similar surfaces, I would appreciate advice on preparing the surface and the actual repair process.
Thanks in advance for your helpful tips!

Hello Kaneni,
Your question is very clearly formulated – that really helps when looking for advice. I’d like to add: Before applying a touch-up pen or paint, gently clean the surface and then carefully smooth the edges of the scratches with very fine sandpaper (around 1000 grit). It’s important not to sand too much to avoid removing all the paint.
After that, apply several thin layers of the appropriate touch-up paint, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly in between. This will help you achieve the smoothest possible surface. For cleaning, a mild dish detergent and a soft cloth are best to avoid causing further damage.
If you like, I can also recommend specific touch-up pen brands that I used for my BILLY mishaps.

Are there specific types of sandpaper recommended for use on painted furniture? I only have coarse sandpaper at home and definitely don’t want to cause any more damage.
Also, I’m curious if anything should be applied after using the touch-up pen, such as clear coat for protection, or if that’s sufficient as is?
