Hello everyone, I am planning a move in the next few weeks and own a Billy bookshelf from IKEA that I need to pack securely. My question is: What methods or materials are best suited for packing a Billy bookshelf for a move to ensure it is well protected against scratches, breaks, or other damage? I am especially interested in whether it is advisable to completely disassemble the shelf or if it can be safely transported assembled with proper padding. Also, are bubble wrap, blankets, or special boxes recommended? I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

I would completely disassemble the Billy shelf. Then protect each board individually with bubble wrap or blankets. This way, scratches and breakage can be reliably prevented.

This is a good topic. I also moved my Billy cabinet last year and felt quite uncertain about whether everything would stay intact. Wrapping all parts in blankets and then securing them with packing tape helped me a lot. It significantly reduced my fear of scratches.

For optimal safety during the move, I recommend fully disassembling the Billy shelf and transporting the individual boards flat. Immediately sensitive edges should be protected with edge guards made of plastic or foam. Additionally, bubble wrap or furniture blankets are advisable for external cushioning. Boxes, if appropriately sized, provide extra protection against dirt and moisture.

That’s really impressive, how many things you need to consider! 🙂 I can only say: it’s better to take the parts apart because when assembled, they are more vulnerable to breakage if they get bumped. Also, wrapping them with bubble wrap on the inside is really fun—it feels like gift wrapping!

For my last move, I also relied on bubble wrap and sturdy boxes – great tips here! 🙂 Another tip from me: If you don’t have professional moving boxes, old mattress covers or even fitted sheets work well to protect disassembled boards. They’re flexible and provide good protection.
