Hello everyone, I have a small problem with my IKEA Malm nightstand. Due to an accident, water stains have appeared on the surface, and I really want to remove them without damaging the finish. Now I'm wondering: Should I rely on proven home remedies like vinegar, toothpaste, or baking soda to remove the water stains, or are specialized chemical cleaners (e.g., solvents or furniture care products from a hardware store) more effective and safer? I want to avoid the finish becoming dull or discolored, so I’m asking here for opinions and experiences. Who has a similar nightstand and has perhaps successfully removed water stains? What are your experiences with home remedies compared to chemicals? What would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance for your tips!
So I tried using toothpaste lightly – and yes, it helped, but you really have to be careful and not scrub too hard. 🙂 I haven’t used any chemicals so far, but if you do it carefully, do you think the finish will really stay intact? It would be great if you could use something like furniture polish instead of aggressive substances. Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget how sensitive these surfaces are, but with the right care, everything lasts longer, right? 😉

IKEA itself recommends mild dishwater and a soft cloth, no chemicals. This is an important point that often gets overlooked in the discussion. If IKEA advises against using harsh chemicals, it should be taken seriously, as manufacturers know their materials best.

Ultimately, it’s a choice between risking damage and preserving the surface. For me, chemicals would only be an option if all other methods have been exhausted or the stains are truly stubborn.
