Hello everyone, I have a small problem with my IKEA Malm nightstand. Due to an accident, water stains have appeared on the surface, and I really want to remove them without damaging the finish. Now I'm wondering: Should I rely on proven home remedies like vinegar, toothpaste, or baking soda to remove the water stains, or are specialized chemical cleaners (e.g., solvents or furniture care products from a hardware store) more effective and safer? I want to avoid the finish becoming dull or discolored, so I’m asking here for opinions and experiences. Who has a similar nightstand and has perhaps successfully removed water stains? What are your experiences with home remedies compared to chemicals? What would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance for your tips!

I think your choice should primarily depend on the condition of your MALM nightstand and its surface. MALM furniture usually has a lacquered finish that can be sensitive to strong chemicals. Home remedies like a mild toothpaste can often gently remove stains without damaging the lacquer. However, there is little scientific research on this, as the effectiveness of home remedies is mostly anecdotal and varies widely.

Chemical cleaners, on the other hand, are specifically formulated for certain stains but carry the risk of altering the finish if used incorrectly. My recommendation: first test a home remedy on a hidden area, and if there is no deterioration, you can apply it to the stains. If not, then use a mild furniture cleaner suitable for lacquered surfaces.

You should definitely avoid using vinegar, as it can damage the paint. Instead, simply use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a little dish soap. Water stains can usually be removed this way.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide for removing water stains from MALM nightstands:

1. First, wipe the surface with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust.
2. Dampen a cloth with mild dish soap and gently wipe the water stains.
3. If the stains are more stubborn, apply a small amount of regular toothpaste (not gel) to a soft cloth and gently polish in circular motions.
4. Afterwards, be sure to remove any residue with a damp cloth and dry the surface.

Common mistakes include using harsh cleaning agents or applying too much pressure, which can easily damage the finish. Avoid using undiluted vinegar or alcohol, as these can dull the finish.

Summary: Household remedies are often sufficient and gentler. Chemicals should only be used as a last resort and with caution.

If water stains are still fresh, simply wiping them dry usually helps. For dried stains, it is best to remove them with gentle toothpaste or furniture polish—avoid vinegar or alcohol!

I agree with that. However, I am cautious about many home remedies because substances like baking soda or toothpaste can contain abrasive materials that cause tiny scratches. These often make water stains more visible over time. The question is: How much risk are you willing to accept? For me, a cleaner specially designed for paint would be the better choice.

It would be interesting to know if anyone has experience with official IKEA care products specifically for MALM.
