Hello everyone, I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf myself and noticed that some of the shelves are not sitting properly. My question to the community: How can typical mistakes during the assembly of Billy bookshelves be identified and avoided? I’m especially interested in what to watch out for regarding load capacity, alignment of the drill holes, and the support pins. Does anyone have experience with common issues or suggestions for solutions that go beyond the instructions? Thanks!

The most important thing is that all anchors are properly seated and the metal pins are inserted straight into the holes. If the shelves wobble, it is usually because the support clips are not correctly locked in place.

A common mistake when assembling the Billy shelf is incorrect alignment of the shelves due to twisted or improperly positioned cam screws. This results in the shelves not lying flat and reduces their load-bearing capacity. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the drill holes in the back panel precisely match the dowels in the carcass, as otherwise the stability will be compromised. Furthermore, always observe the load limits of the shelves, as overloading can cause bending or even structural issues.

Blavin writes: "Observe the load limits" – that is certainly correct, but how is the load capacity specified by IKEA actually verified? Isn’t it more of a theoretical figure that is often overestimated in practice? I would like to know if there are reliable practical experiences that confirm or contradict these values. Also, I think many problems arise because the instructions are too brief for inexperienced users.

I completely understand the frustration with assembly mistakes. I felt the same way when I built my first Billy bookshelf – the instructions were okay, but I initially had trouble with the small metal pins that hold the shelves in place. My shelves weren’t sitting flush, which worried me. In the end, what helped was taking everything apart and realigning all the parts carefully; sometimes patience is all it takes 🙂 If you’re currently dealing with this kind of issue, keep at it – it’s worth it!

Basically, it is important to test-fit all the shelves before final assembly. This allows you to quickly check whether the drill holes and pins fit correctly. Also, make sure to push the metal pins all the way in and straight. A slight wobble usually indicates that the pins are not properly inserted. Additionally, you can check the back panel by gently tapping and securing it, as a loose back panel often causes instability. If possible, use a small spirit level to ensure that nothing is hanging crooked.
