Hello everyone, I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf myself and noticed that some of the shelves are not sitting properly. My question to the community: How can typical mistakes during the assembly of Billy bookshelves be identified and avoided? I’m especially interested in what to watch out for regarding load capacity, alignment of the drill holes, and the support pins. Does anyone have experience with common issues or suggestions for solutions that go beyond the instructions? Thanks!

My shelves were not installed flush, which worried me.

That’s exactly my point. I have checked at least three times to make sure the shelves are properly in place, but the feeling of instability remains. Maybe it’s because of the back panel, as koneo mentioned. Does anyone have instructions on how to correctly install the back panel? I’m afraid I might have overlooked slight misalignments there.

The back panel must be positioned exactly centered and flush – all nails should be driven fully into the wall. If the back panel is crooked, it can warp the entire shelving unit and cause the shelves to be unstable.

Exactly, that’s what I meant. Additionally, the back panel is often not secured firmly enough to the wall. Even if it is aligned properly, without proper fastening the shelf can tilt. Additional wall anchoring can prevent many issues.

Secure the back panel properly, pressing all anchors in straight – this prevents 90% of errors. Do not tighten the screws too much, as this can warp the side panels.
