Why do some Billy shelves no longer fit perfectly in the unit? I have an IKEA Billy bookcase with several shelves that I bought years ago. Now, while rearranging, I notice that some of the shelves don’t fit as precisely as before, even after repeated adjustments and slight modifications. The boards don’t sit flush anymore; some wobble, and the holes for the dowels don’t seem to line up exactly. I’m wondering what could be causing this – whether it’s due to the material, changes in the wood because of moisture, or possibly a production change at IKEA. Does anyone have information or experience with this issue? Maybe some tips on how to fix it without having to buy new shelves entirely?

You should make sure to drill the holes as parallel as possible and not too wide, otherwise the stability will be compromised.Thank you for the advice, I will keep that in mind.
I also have a question: Could it be that the inserts and the back panel affect the fit of the shelves? I’ve noticed that when I install the back panel correctly, the shelves sometimes fit more tightly, but not always. How important is the correct installation of the back panel for overall stability and the precise positioning of the shelves?

The back panel provides the necessary stability to the shelving unit and prevents warping. If the back panel is not properly fitted or is installed too loosely, the entire unit can easily become distorted, causing the shelves to no longer fit precisely.
I recommend, whenever renovating or replacing shelves, to first securely screw or clamp the back panel in place before inserting the shelves. You should also ensure that the angles and joints on the sides are aligned correctly, as this forms the foundation for a proper fit.
Wow, I never really thought much about the back panel – but now that I read about how much influence it has, it totally makes sense!
I also took my shelves completely apart and noticed how much the back panel holds the whole system together. It’s such a simple trick that really works! 🙂
So: first fit the back panel properly, then the shelves, and finally the doors or supports. This makes everything stable and the shelves fit perfectly.
