Hello forum friends,

We are quite happy with the Q2 plaster on the ground floor, so we only want to paint it.
However, I am concerned about our roller shutter boxes from the inside, as they were left out by the plasterer.
Our scope of work description states: Q2, ready for wallpapering.

Does this mean that the roller shutter boxes made of plastic are not plastered?
If we had known that...

How is it with you?

Where is the inspection opening accessed from? From the front or from underneath the window unit?

Hello Martina,

Is it visible? How can you tell? I need to check...

Thank you, Martina, for the example photos and your effort.

However, I’m stuck and will probably have to ask the site manager whether this is now "ready for wallpapering" and if it would look different if we had chosen Q4.

As you can see, our windows including the roller shutter boxes were installed—they came fully assembled, neat in white plastic... nice at the shell stage—but of course, the plastic doesn’t look very homely once covered with plaster.
There is nothing about this in the technical specification.

This has nothing to do with the quality levels; these refer to interior plaster and drywall work.

Here is an example description of Q4:

Quality Level Q4

Quality level Q4 includes all the work of quality level Q3 plus a complete reworking of the surface using a suitable filler material. In connection with Q4, flatness tolerances with higher requirements must be contractually agreed upon.

Execution:

 • Work according to quality level Q3
 • A full additional coat and smoothing of the entire surface with a suitable filler material (layer thickness > 1 mm (0.04 inches))

Typical applications:

 • Smooth wall coverings and coatings with gloss, e.g., metallic, vinyl, or silk wallpapers
 • Glazes or coatings up to medium gloss
 • Filling and smoothing techniques

A surface treatment meeting the requirements of quality level Q4 minimizes the possibility of shadowing from panels and/or joints. The surface is fundamentally influenced by daylight or artificial lighting. Absolute shadow-free results with grazing light cannot be achieved. The lighting conditions expected during later use must be known and ideally set up at the time of filling. Additionally, practical execution limits on site must be considered. Surfaces that appear absolutely flat and shadow-free even under grazing light cannot be achieved by craftsmanship alone. In individual cases, additional measures may be required in conjunction with coating and adhesive work, e.g., multiple rounds of filling and sanding to prepare the surface for the final coating, such as high-gloss coatings, paints, or lacquered wallpapers. In these cases, it is recommended that the finishing layer that goes beyond Q3 be applied by the specialist contractor who performs the final coating.

There’s nothing about this in the building specifications...
I see the issue more in whether there is enough backing inside the roller shutter box (I can’t tell from the photos) and, if so, how the connection to the surrounding interior plaster is supposed to be made...

Let me know what comes out of your conversation. Until then, I’m crossing my fingers that there will be a satisfactory solution for you.

Good morning,

Yes, I am aware that this relates to the quality of the surface plaster. However, when the builder offers "ready for wallpaper," they can say: "why plaster, since the wallpaper will cover it anyway? If you (meaning me) don’t want that, then you should have chosen Q4. But as it is, the box will be covered by wallpaper anyway."

According to the scope of work: Gypsum plaster applied as a one-coat machine-applied plaster with a wallpaper-ready surface (Q2) ...

Regarding the door frame or anything else: the building surveyor had no complaints.

I will keep you informed about how this develops... these issues keep frustrating me more and more, and this thread is meant to highlight the small details to watch out for and how money can be spent on unexpected minor things that were never planned for in advance!

Thank you very much,
Yvonne wishes you a nice day
