Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and want to design the kitchen layout to be as ergonomic and comfortable as possible. I am especially interested in how to best adjust the working heights, which cabinet combinations provide optimal freedom of movement, and any practical tips for using drawers and pull-outs to avoid unnecessary movements while cooking and cleaning. Does anyone have experience with planning kitchen layouts like this and can offer recommendations on what to consider to ensure long-term ergonomic comfort? Thanks in advance!

Wall cabinets should be installed no higher than a height that can be reached without stretchingThat’s a good point. I’m concerned about my height (1.60 m (5 ft 3 in)) and whether I will be able to reach the upper cabinets easily. Is there a recommended maximum height or practical solutions for this? Even the distance between the countertop and the wall cabinet raises the question of how to adjust it optimally.
For individuals around 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in) tall, it is recommended to install the bottom edge of upper cabinets between 50 and 55 cm (20 and 22 inches) above the countertop. This distance affects head clearance and workspace. The standard height is often 60 cm (24 inches), but this can be too high. Practical alternatives include height-adjustable brackets or replacing the upper cabinet with open shelving units to increase flexibility.
I think ergonomic planning with Metod is really enjoyable if you pay attention to a few details! Especially the combination of drawers instead of doors and the option for illuminated work surfaces make a big difference in everyday use. It simply provides better organization and a more comfortable working environment – I can only recommend fine-tuning the working height and choosing good accessories! Good luck with your planning!
