ᐅ New Window Pane Cracked – Possible Causes?

Hello everyone,

About 1 1/2 years ago, we had new PVC windows installed by Aldra (white on the inside and anthracite on the outside, P4A burglar-resistant glass) in a 40-year-old house.
A few days ago, a crack appeared without any external impact in the fixed panoramic glass, starting diagonally from the lower left frame upwards to the right.

My questions to the experts:

1. What could be the possible causes of the glass breakage?

2. What should I consider to prevent such damage in the future?

3. How much might the repair or damage compensation cost?

Thank you for your answers

View through glass window onto balcony with dark wooden railing; houses, tree, tiled floor.

View through window onto suburb: red roofs, bare trees, blue sky; bright arc in the sky.

Why should I have to prove that there was nothing in front of it?
In all my previous construction projects, I have never signed a disclaimer stating that nothing should be placed in front of the windows. I also can’t imagine that being a general rule?

Because almost all glass/pane/window manufacturers explicitly point this out. Stress cracks are explicitly—and unfortunately universally—not covered under warranty. You can check with manufacturers and tradespeople for more information. If anything is done, it is usually on a goodwill basis. You only have a claim if you can prove faulty installation. It’s unfortunate, but it cannot be changed.

Let me give you a summary from the Federal Association of Experts in the construction glass sector:
SUMMARY: “Thermal glass breakage,” “mechanical glass breakage,” or a combination of both can have various causes. To date, there is no guarantee to completely prevent these risks. In the case of glass breakage in installed units after final inspection, neither the glass supplier nor the window installer is responsible. However, thorough planning can identify and avoid most problems in advance.
