ᐅ My KALLAX unit tips over when the vacuum cleaner bumps into it – any ideas?

pijomeHello everyone,
I have an issue with my KALLAX shelf that is honestly quite annoying. Whenever I vacuum next to it and the hose or nozzle bumps against it, the entire unit tilts slightly forward. The shelf isn’t fully loaded, but it seems to be positioned quite close to the wall and standing on laminate flooring, which is not slip-resistant. By now, this worries me because I’m afraid something might eventually fall or get damaged.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the KALLAX more stable? I’m thinking about anchoring it to the wall, adding extra feet, or maybe using an anti-slip element. I’m not looking for a completely different solution, just practical tips that are easy to implement. Thanks in advance!

I have a problem with my KALLAX shelf, which honestly is quite annoying. The most likely cause of the tipping is missing contact with the floor or an insufficient base area. KALLAX units are not inherently tip-resistant unless they are secured.
It is recommended to fasten them to the wall using the included brackets. If these are not available, you can purchase brackets inexpensively at a hardware store to secure the shelf. Alternatively, non-slip rubber pads can be attached to the feet to improve grip on smooth floors. Stabilizing the unit with additional support or base rails can also help.
It is also important to distribute the load evenly and store heavy items as low and centered as possible to keep the center of gravity low.
Hello pijome,
I can confirm that KALLAX units can tip over during strong impacts if they are not secured to the wall, especially on smooth floors. I recommend first checking whether your KALLAX unit comes with the original angle brackets – many IKEA models already include these.
If not, you can easily purchase them separately and install them yourself. This ensures the shelving unit is anchored to the wall and cannot tip forward.
Additionally, you can place rubber pads or felt gliders under the feet to reduce slipping. One tip: make sure the floor is level, as uneven surfaces can increase the risk of tipping.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Wall mounting using the supplied bracketsThis is the most important point. Additionally, beyond what has already been mentioned, I recommend not only securing the KALLAX to the wall at the top but also stabilizing it at the bottom with small anti-slip pads. This is especially important on laminate flooring, as it is often smooth and has low grip.
Another tip: if you place the shelving unit against the wall, a simple wooden spacer at the bottom can help reduce the tipping force.
This will prevent the shelving from wobbling due to minor vibrations or bumps.
I would like to add that regardless of the solution you choose, the center of gravity of your KALLAX is crucial.
Make sure that heavy items are placed low and as centrally as possible within the shelf. Uneven loading leads to unstable standing conditions.
It is also important that the piece of furniture stands fully on the floor. Even a small unevenness or a missing foot piece can increase the risk of tipping.
In short: wall anchoring combined with anti-slip measures on the floor and mindful weight distribution are the most effective steps.
