ᐅ KALLAX feels unstable after assembly – any tips for improving stability?

Hello everyone, I recently assembled a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA, but I noticed that the shelf feels quite unstable after assembly. Although all screws and dowels are properly installed, the shelf noticeably wobbles when lightly bumped. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if I might have made a mistake during assembly.

Are there any specific tips or tricks to improve the stability of the KALLAX without having to alter the entire structure? I’m particularly interested in whether there are ways to secure the shelf to the floor or the wall, or if adding additional braces would be helpful.

Your observation is interesting, Debora. In general, the KALLAX shelving unit is not designed as heavy-duty furniture due to its design, so some slight instability is not unusual.

This suggests to me that the stability without wall mounting is rather limited. Have you used all the supplied brackets and fixings? Sometimes the final wall anchor is missing, which significantly improves stability.

Additionally, adding back panels or braces can greatly reduce sideways movement. Have you already checked whether the back panel is fully fitted and securely screwed in? That makes a big difference.

Wall mounting is mandatory. Use sturdy brackets and secure the shelf to the wall. The floor cannot be directly fixed, but non-slip pads can help.

I would recommend attaching a thin plywood panel to the back in addition to the supplied backboard. This will make the shelf significantly more stable.

We’re talking about a simple room divider shelf here, not a heavy-duty tool storage unit. If you want more stability, you should choose a different construction method or a different model. The “tips” for improving stability are nice, but only somewhat useful.

I partly agree, rebufar. However, there are definitely cases where the KALLAX was surprisingly unstable, even though the assembly was done correctly.

My advice: Use a spirit level to check if the shelf is really level. Often, people tend to place it on an uneven floor, which increases the perception of instability.
