Hello everyone,

I have a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA that I would like to keep level and stable, but unfortunately, I rarely manage to get it perfectly straight and aligned. It often appears slightly tilted, which is not only visually distracting but also makes stacking items safely more difficult. The shelf stands on a floor that is not completely even at that spot – although the unevenness is minimal. I have already tried adjusting the feet and sometimes placing small shims underneath, but I’m still not fully satisfied.

My specific question: What tips or tricks can you share to reliably keep my Kallax shelf level and stable, even if the floor isn’t perfectly flat? Are there any special tools or methods that have proven effective in such cases? I would appreciate any practical help, as this is a minor annoyance in my home that I would like to resolve.

Thanks in advance!

Simply attach small furniture gliders or felt pads under the feet; these can often be trimmed to fit.

If more stability is needed, you can level the feet using foam wedges.

Also, make sure all screws are properly tightened.

Hello Sigigau,

I’m familiar with your issue with the Kallax shelf on an uneven floor. Here is a structured approach to solving it:

1. Check the floor: Measure exactly where the unevenness is, ideally using a spirit level.

2. Adjust the feet: IKEA often supplies small plastic feet that have limited adjustability. I recommend using flexible furniture wedges or adjustable furniture feet available at hardware stores.

3. Underlay: Sometimes thin non-slip rubber mats can help improve stability and compensate for minor unevenness.

4. Securing: For safety, you can also fix the shelf to the wall—not just to prevent it from tilting but also to increase stability.

5. Final step – adjustment: After installing the wedges, repeatedly check if the shelf remains level.

Common mistakes include using wedges that are too thick or too thin or placing them unevenly in the wrong spots. That’s why it’s always best to carefully check with a quality spirit level.

In summary: With adjustable feet and regular checks, you can keep your Kallax shelf level in the long run.

That might seem reasonable at first, but often it’s just a temporary fix. If the floor isn’t properly level, I don’t understand why many people just place the shelf there and then fiddle around with these small plastic pads.

Guys, why struggle with rubber mats and shims when the whole concept is flawed? In my opinion, furniture needs a truly solid base—either fix the floor or use a smart construction solution (for example, build a platform).

Constantly trying to adjust the furniture won’t solve the root cause—the shelf will always stand somewhat uneven, which just leads to frustration in the long run. Just my opinion 🙂

So, I somewhat share jotisi’s opinion, but hey, no need to panic! ?

Sometimes a slightly crooked Kallax isn’t such a big deal – sure, appearance matters, but usually it bothers only us more than it’s actually a problem.

My advice: get small adjustable furniture glides made of plastic. They’re inexpensive, don’t wobble, and can be finely adjusted so that your Kallax will be almost perfectly level as if by magic.

Also, a rug underneath can help conceal minor unevenness and, at the same time, prevent the shelf from sliding when doors or drawers are opened. 🙂

And if you screw the shelf to the wall (which is always safer!), you’re also on the safe side in terms of stability.

Give it a try—it’s worth fiddling with a little! ?
