ᐅ My Kallax shelves are developing warping or ripples on the sides after carpet cleaning.

Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from Ikea at home that I really like using – it’s sturdy and practical. However, after the last carpet cleaning, I noticed unsightly warping on the outer sides of the Kallax shelf. These waves mainly appear where the particleboard or chipboard is used. My question is: Is this a common issue with Kallax shelves after exposure to moisture? Could it be that the surface coating is not sufficiently water-resistant? And are there any tips on how to prevent or at least minimize such warping when working in a room with damp cleaning? I’m looking forward to your opinions and experiences on this.

Kallax and similar furniture should not be exposed to moisture. Avoid wiping the sides directly with a wet cloth or using steam cleaning. For carpet cleaning, it is usually sufficient to ventilate the room well. If the shelf becomes damp, warping is often unavoidable.

That’s really a shame! But wow, such small furniture protection measures really make a big difference! I think it’s great that there are already tips here on how to prevent damage with paint or sealant. 🙂 I once coated a small wooden table with water-repellent clear varnish myself, and it worked wonders! Maybe something like that would be perfect for your Kallax too? Don’t give up; a shelf like that remains a real space saver!

Does anyone here perhaps use a specific cleaning method for carpets that won’t damage the shelving unit?

I completely understand that you want to preserve the Kallax. In general, for furniture made of particleboard that isn’t fully waterproof, it’s best to use as little moisture as possible – ideally just a slightly damp cloth, wiping it dry immediately. When cleaning carpets, if possible, I would recommend briefly moving or covering the furniture to prevent any damage. Your concern is definitely justified!
