Hello everyone,
I have a Malm bed from IKEA that has started to squeak quite a lot in the past few weeks. The noise mainly occurs when turning over or sitting down, and it sounds quite metallic.
My question is: How can I systematically identify the exact cause of this squeaking? Are there common weak points in this model that I should pay attention to?
So far, I have tried tightening the screws, but that didn’t really help much. It would be great if you could recommend a kind of checklist or step-by-step approach so I can pinpoint the area causing the noise and hopefully fix it.

FAVALERIE923 Apr 2023 09:02The problem often arises from slight movements at the brackets connecting the side panels to the frame. Carefully check these connections and use felt or rubber caps as buffers. This usually reduces noise immediately.
In addition to checking the screws and joints, I recommend paying special attention to any possible deformation, especially of the metal parts. These can rub against each other under load and cause squeaking.
Consistently insulating the contact points with thin foam or felt pads can provide a long-lasting solution.

In the meantime, I was able to narrow down the area by careful testing, focusing on the headboard where the creaking is most noticeable. I will try using felt strips and check all the screws as well as the slatted frame again.
Can anyone advise if special attention should be given to the orientation of the metal connectors on the headboard during assembly? Could incorrect assembly contribute to the squeaking?

Can anyone say if special attention is needed to the orientation of the metal connectors on the headboard during assembly?Yes, definitely! The metal connectors must lie completely flat, otherwise there can be point pressure spots that cause noise.
Sometimes, slightly adjusting the parts—just a few millimeters (inches) is often enough—helps. If the metal rubs against the wood, felt or rubber strips can also be inserted there.
Good luck, squeaking Malm beds are a common issue but usually easy to fix.
