Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Malm furniture for the children’s room, but I’m unsure how to make it as child-safe as possible. Specifically, I want to know how to prevent the furniture from tipping over and if there are any additional precautions I should take, for example regarding the drawers or edges.

The furniture should, of course, be suitable for children, but at the same time I don’t want to create dangerous tripping hazards or limit the functionality too much.

Do you have any recommendations or experiences with safety measures that have proven effective for Malm furniture? Are there certified products available, or is it better to make custom solutions? I look forward to your advice!

A practical solution is flexible wall anchors that you can easily use with multiple pieces of furniture. This way, you don’t need to attach fixed brackets to every single item, which can be difficult to remove later.

If you are interested in edge protectors, be sure to look for certification marks such as EN 71-3 (for non-toxic materials), which ensures that no harmful substances are present even in your child’s environment.

Do I still need to secure everything so strictly with lower furniture?

It is always a matter of balancing: the younger and more active the child, the more safety measures make sense.

Good morning,

I just wanted to say again that I have had very good experience with the combination of wall anchors and drawer locks. Our little one is now 2 years old and likes to climb. Today I checked our furniture again and was grateful that we have consistently installed all the safety devices.

If you want, I can also tell you exactly which sets we used. For me, safety is simply worth every bit of effort, especially when it comes to furniture that could tip over.

One more technical note about wall fastenings:

For Malm furniture, the designated fixing points are predefined. Make sure not to screw the fasteners directly into plaster, drywall, or stud work, but rather into the load-bearing parts of the wall – this greatly improves safety.

Use appropriate wall plugs (e.g., metal or heavy-duty anchors) and strong screws.

Only a secure anchoring in the wall ensures that the furniture cannot tip over, no matter how wildly your child plays.

To supplement the technical details:

One option for securing furniture is the use of metal brackets or additional cross braces to increase stability. However, these are usually only necessary if the furniture will carry heavy loads or is placed on uneven surfaces.

The wall material also plays a role. For lightweight partition walls, it is advisable to use cavity anchors with higher load capacity or alternatively install a backing panel that serves as a mounting base.

Absolutely essential—I followed the same approach.

Thank you very much for all the valuable answers!

I will first focus on the wall anchors and drawer locks. I have also found some recommended product names or brands here.

I especially appreciate the advice on choosing the right type of anchors since I live in an older building with partly slightly crumbling walls. I will probably use heavy-duty anchors and possibly metal brackets as well.

If I need more tips, I will get in touch again 🙂 Thanks!
