Hello everyone, I’m looking for effective ways to secure my Billy shelf so that my pets cannot access it. The main concern is to prevent my curious cats from climbing onto the shelves or knocking items down. It’s important to me that the solution remains practical and that I don’t have to completely modify the shelf. Does anyone have tips or tricks on how to make the Billy shelf pet-proof without involving major structural changes? Accessories or DIY ideas are welcome.

If plexiglass is too complicated: furniture clamps or clips on the shelves prevent the boards from being lifted.

That is a nice addition. So far, my cats usually ended up on the shelves by climbing through openings from below. Securing the shelves with clamps could help make access more difficult.

Here is a brief guide on how to make the Billy shelf inaccessible to pets:
1. Measure the surface area of the shelf you want to protect.
2. Obtain suitable plexiglass sheets, at least 4 mm (0.16 inches) thick.
3. Drill holes in the sheets matching the hole spacing of the Billy shelves.
4. Secure the sheets with screws and washers to prevent slipping.
5. For added stability, you can also attach hinges and even padlocks if your pet’s curiosity is extreme.
In my experience, this method works very well and is relatively easy to implement.

Alternatively, you can simply move the top shelves higher, which makes climbing more difficult for cats.

I have had a different experience: You can retrofit glass doors from the original Billy accessories, which provide good protection against access, as most cats are deterred by closed doors.

Regarding glass doors: The Billy bookshelf is compatible with the original doors from Ikea. These provide a neat appearance and help protect against dust and pets. It is important to mount the doors securely, including the magnetic catches. However, with very clever cats, attempts to open the doors may still occur. In such cases, additional security with latches is advisable.
