Hello everyone, I have a Billy shelving unit where several dowels and screws are loose, some shelves no longer fit firmly, and it wobbles slightly. Before ordering new accessories or complete replacement sets, I wanted to ask if there are any practical tips or experiences on how to assemble a repair kit for Billy shelves myself? I am particularly interested in which types of dowels, screws, and possibly wood glue or other materials have proven effective to restore stability without having to disassemble the entire unit or buy new parts. Does anyone perhaps have a step-by-step guide or a list of useful components to get for this? Thanks for your support!

Hello nazmi37,

Regarding the topic of making repair kits for Billy shelves yourself, here is a brief guide:

1. Dowels & screws: It’s best to use 8 mm (5/16 inch) wooden dowels with a length of 30-40 mm (1 1/4 - 1 5/8 inches) along with suitable chipboard screws (3.5 x 30 mm / 1/8 x 1 1/4 inches). The old dowels are usually swollen and damaged, so replacing them makes sense.

2. Wood glue: Clear wood glue significantly strengthens the joints, especially the dowel connections.

3. Shelves: If a shelf is bending, you can reinforce it with additional corner brackets – this provides more support.

4. Spacers: Small rubber buffers prevent wobbling, particularly on shelves without fixed grooves.

Tip: Do not tighten the screws too much, or the wood panels may split.

This way, you can put together a quick repair kit that fixes almost all Billy shelf issues.

I hope this helps you!

I would recommend slightly enlarging the original holes so the new anchors grip better. If you use wood glue, apply light pressure or weigh it down briefly until the glue dries.

This advice is essential. Over-tightening screws can cause microcracks and reduce load-bearing capacity. Therefore, apply torque carefully and with restraint. For Billy shelves, standard particleboard screws, as already mentioned, are recommended.

Additionally, for wooden dowels, it is advisable to slightly dampen them before insertion to allow swelling and improve adhesion. Use wood glue sparingly and spread it evenly.

Finally, if the shelf board is damaged in several places, replacing it with a suitable wooden panel can be more cost-effective than repairing it.

I repaired my Billy shelf with some homemade replacement dowels – just cut small beechwood rods and filed them to size.

Of course, it’s nothing complicated and much cheaper than original parts. A bit of wood glue underneath, and voilà, almost like new. 🙂 You just need to be careful when inserting them, don’t press too hard, or the wood will split.

Sounds simple, and it is, plus it’s actually fun to do a little DIY project like this. 😉

About the material:

I recommend using only beech or maple wooden dowels, as these are harder than pine or spruce, which are usually used for cheap hardware store dowels. This noticeably increases stability.

Additionally, rosewood oil or a similar wood oil applied after the repair can help protect the wood from moisture and keep the shelf stable for longer.

Otherwise, I would use additional metal brackets sparingly, only if structural support requires it. However, in my experience, original Billy parts can be perfectly repaired with the described set.
