Hello everyone,

I recently outfitted my kitchen entirely with Ikea Metod fronts and I am generally very pleased with their appearance and quality. Now I’m wondering how to maintain and visually protect these cabinet fronts over the long term, especially to prevent signs of wear, discoloration, and minor scratches.

My main concern is the right cleaning methods, suitable care products, and possibly preventive measures to keep the fronts looking good even after years of use. Since the surfaces are quite smooth and laminate-like, I’m uncertain which products are gentle enough to preserve the finish without drying out or damaging it.

Are there any special cleaning products you would recommend? Or home remedies that should be avoided? Also, what about applying an occasional protective layer, for example with specific polishes or sealants, to make the material more resistant to stains or scratches?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello RICKSAN,

your question is very good, and I have also looked into this since I have a similar kitchen with Metod fronts. Especially when it comes to the long-term appearance, you naturally worry about how everyday use might affect the surface.

Regarding cleaning: I usually rely on a mild all-purpose cleaner that does not contain aggressive solvents. In my opinion, this is a safe approach. Using a soft cloth is important to avoid scratches.

However, I must admit that sometimes I am unsure whether the fronts can be better protected with additional care – for example, with special polishes. I haven’t read much reliable information on this and haven’t tried it myself yet. Your previous tips have made me curious if there might be something I have overlooked.

Perhaps someone here has already tried some type of protective application to make these smooth surfaces more durable? I would also be interested in hearing how well it has worked in practice.

After all, you want the kitchen to still look good after a few years and not appear dull or faded.

In general, it should be noted that Ikea Metod kitchen fronts are often made of melamine-coated particle boards. These are generally quite sturdy and resistant to many household chemicals, but some care guidelines should be followed:

- Clean only with mild cleaners (pH-neutral or slightly alkaline), avoiding harsh abrasives or solvents
- Use microfiber cloths or soft sponges for scrubbing
- It is recommended to dry the fronts with a dry cloth after cleaning to prevent water spots

Special polishes or sealants are not necessary and can even damage the surface, as they are not designed for melamine-coated surfaces.

For long-term protection, I advise avoiding direct contact with aggressive substances—so do not place hot pots on the fronts and try to minimize mechanical stress.

For stain removal, diluted vinegar solutions or mild soap solutions are suitable, but never use strongly acidic cleaners or all-purpose cleaners containing solvents.

In general, regular gentle cleaning is sufficient to keep the fronts looking like new for a long time.

Absolutely true – for kitchen fronts made of melamine, you shouldn’t apply any extra “protective layer,” as this often causes more harm than good in the long run.

I usually clean my Metod fronts quite easily with warm water and a drop of dish soap; that’s more than enough to remove all grease and fingerprints. And yes, I always make sure to dry them thoroughly afterward to avoid ugly water spots.

My tip for anyone like me who occasionally has a small accident with a scraper or sharp cutlery on the edge of the front: a bit of fine sandpaper or a gentle polish can help fix minor scratches – but please be careful and apply only locally!

Other than that, the fronts aren’t high-gloss lacquer surfaces but are fairly durable, although you should still treat them gently. Like you would with a good friend, really 😉

So, no magic products, just a little care and the right basic cleaning methods. That’s how Metod fronts survive even the wildest cooking sessions!
