Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

No, there are no standardized dimensions for the refrigerator. During the planning and construction, we carefully ensured that the measurements were accurate. If we had used handleless cabinets along the window side, our desired cabinet layout wouldn’t have worked out, since handleless designs reduce the width by a few centimeters (inches). We find it very practical to have handles on that side, while the rest of the kitchen is completely handleless.

What is the workbench used for?

Best regards,

On one hand, the workbench serves as a visual focal point; on the other hand, the recessed area at the back of the workbench is used for kitchen herbs and cooking utensils, and the work surface of the bench is also frequently used for collaborative cooking.

I have looked at it for about 10 minutes now and have come to the conclusion that it’s not for me. I find the bench too large/massive compared to the rest. Otherwise, I like the kitchen.

The kitchen is a bit too colorful for my taste; even the yellow Balea dish soap bottle would bother me. I prefer a more orderly look, but otherwise, it’s a nice kitchen with a great view!

Obviously, the workbench is hefty. But that’s exactly what a solid workbench should be. It’s not a replica, but an original feature that can definitely stand out.
I like it!
However, I wouldn’t want it myself because I don’t like the narrow boards added on top of the island. I prefer a smooth surface.

The built-in refrigerator doesn’t match the style of the rest, in my opinion.

What’s funny is that our kitchen has many similarities, yet it’s still different. Same perspectives, stainless steel-look fridge between the light strip and floor-to-ceiling patio door, white cabinetry fronts, tall cabinet wall, 18mm (0.7 inch) dark countertop... opposite staircase is open, just rotated... hallway is open too...

And it’s also funny that I thought the same as @Curly: without any activity, it already feels too “cluttered” to me.

But thanks again for sharing a refreshing kitchen design.
