ᐅ First step toward the new open-plan kitchen! Is this design feasible?

Good morning,

we have now reached the point where we need to think about the kitchen in our new build.
The current plan looks like this:

2D kitchen floor plan with sink, stove, and base cabinets in L-shape

It was very important to us that the oven/microwave and dishwasher are not located at floor level.
We have not yet decided whether to install a downdraft extractor or a slanted hood. However, due to the ventilation system, we need an automatic extraction duct to the exterior wall, similar to a Flow Star 150.

The initial quote shocked us a bit. After some calculations, the kitchen planner came up with 12,000 euros (without appliances) for a Nobilia kitchen with good gloss fronts and mid-range drawers.

3D floor plan of an interior: white kitchen unit, red floor, white furniture structures

Since the space is quite limited, would you do anything differently?
Any tips or comments?
How do you assess the price in relation to the kitchen?
Since the manufacturer uses standard sizes, would you prefer to buy from a large furniture store or from a smaller kitchen studio?

Thank you for your help!

I will consider raising the option with the government.

Are you cooking or is it “the government”?
I assume it’s she... since only an “he” without cooking skills would write something like that.

By the way, back to the layout topic. Otherwise, this doesn’t make much sense.

I’ve attached the complete floor plan.

Where?

Incredible, but we both cook!
The floor plan with measurements is in post #21.
However, everyone has contributed their ideas here, and in this case, the dishwasher layout is not from me.
Regardless, the kitchen forums I have found so far all seem to be sales forums for certain retailers. As soon as you register, your inbox fills up with consultation and sales offers.

@Subwoofer, then you still haven’t searched for a base cabinet with a waste sorting system.

I only see the open-plan living area. When I talk about the floor plan in combination with the discussion, I mean the entire layout. Additionally, the needs of the people involved must be specified: there is a difference between a couple using a kitchen and a whole family. Whether there are many guests who might even cook along, and so on...
You also need to know if the window can be moved or modified...

Just to clarify again:

So, the open kitchen layout is more due to space constraints than a desire for an open view.

Do you think you’ll have more space with an open kitchen than with a closed one?
You actually don’t have much space planned for your kitchen. (By the way, the kitchen length can still only be estimated!)
I also find it quite cramped because of the short wall by the fridge. You’re planning a kitchen with four sides, which means it won’t be easy for two people to move around without getting in each other’s way. If the placement of appliances is off, you might be annoyed every day by bumping into doors or panels.

If you look at the important appliances like the oven, fridge, and dishwasher, all of these—together with the stove and sink—need functional placement so that, for example, when cooking, you don’t get in each other’s way, the dishwasher can be operated easily, and no one gets hit by the fridge door.
What type of room is next to the kitchen? Couldn’t the kitchen be closed off with a door to the hallway, and then consider a galley kitchen layout with two parallel runs?
From my point of view, your wishes are difficult to realize as planned.
Kerstin has designed a nice kitchen, but it has three separate runs, which creates a somewhat restless layout.
“Integrating” the half-height cabinet into the living area is, to me, the worst option, since it leaves no room for alternatives.
If it were my house, I would keep adjusting the plan until the priority with the half-height dishwasher works properly. You need countertop space, meaning walls—or more room.

Since the manufacturer is standardized, would you lean toward a large furniture store or a small kitchen studio?

I would recommend a book on buying kitchens or to search this forum for the long-running thread about kitchen prices. It really is its own topic.

...with appliances, around 16,000? Then after negotiation, back to 12,000? I think that’s a fair price.

I also find it very cramped because of the short wall with the refrigerator. You are planning a 4-sided kitchen layout, which means you won’t be able to move comfortably with two people in the kitchen. You will likely get in each other’s way. If the appliance arrangement is not right, you might end up frustrated every day or bump into a door or cabinet front.

That’s exactly my concern. The length is 181cm (71 inches) plus a cabinet recessed 90cm (35 inches) on the left. The width is 353cm (139 inches).
Since the kitchen planner just copied our idea but apparently ignored the practical aspects, I am especially uncertain about the available space for the appliances.

No, it’s even 17,500. But I have already rejected that firmly because I would pay significantly less for appliances I buy myself.
