Good morning everyone,
We have ordered a kitchen for our new build, but the delivery is not scheduled until late 2023. Until then, we still have many options to adjust. One of these I am now considering changing, but I wanted to gather some experiences here first. It’s about the drawers—specifically the drawer side panels. In the Schüller kitchen we chose, the drawer sides are made of glass. However, I’m concerned that after some time they might no longer look good and cleaning them will always require emptying the drawers. The biggest advantage and a convincing argument was the clear visibility inside the drawers, which sit slightly higher. But I fear that over time, cleaning needs will diminish this benefit.
Has anyone had experience with this and would like to share?
If necessary, we might still upgrade to fully enclosed drawers.

And elements that are not made of glass still need to be cleaned the same way. Actually, glass is more of an upgrade; having no glass would be more like a downgrade. Glass shows dust, fingerprints, etc., much more visibly than having no glass at all. I have never had to clean the side panels of my previous kitchen because I was disgusted by their condition. Our glass doors, however, have needed cleaning several times since dust eventually becomes visible due to normal everyday activity in the house. I expect the same with the kitchen, even though the cabinets are mostly closed; they are constantly emptied and refilled through use. Especially in the drawers with food, I can well imagine the glass panels getting dirty quite quickly.

No experience, because I don’t see why I should pay extra for glass side panels on drawers. If they’re included anyway, fine – otherwise a) you hardly see them, and b) cleaning doesn’t really matter since a) applies. I think you’re mixing things up; that’s not what I wrote. Glass = standard. Closed = custom request = extra cost.
You do see them – when you open the drawers :-D

Myrna_Loy10 Aug 2022 09:59If you are planning a space tower, I would recommend using glass for all drawers from about shoulder height upwards, and regular materials for all others.

You can already see them – when you open the drawers :-D So, just a few seconds a day, or do you leave all the drawers open to admire the glass?
Considering a typical 24-hour day, it’s clear that “viewing” the side panels is practically irrelevant. The outside of the kitchen can certainly be “nice and attractive.” However, inside the cabinets, I prefer a practical design — whether using glass, plastic, wood, or metal. But as always, everything is individual, and priorities in house building and furnishing vary.

I have the same concern about the kitchen. Although the cabinets are usually closed most of the time, they are constantly being emptied and refilled through regular use. Especially in the drawers storing food, I can easily imagine the glass elements getting dirty quite quickly. If that worries you, then choose closed cabinets and focus on the next issue.

But I like your sense of humor ;-)
