Hello everyone,
I own the classic IKEA Billy bookcase and have been facing the challenge of how to clean the shelves both effectively and gently for some time. Dust and small dirt particles tend to accumulate quickly, and with some cleaning products, I worry they might damage the surface or leave stains.
Therefore, my question to you is: What products and methods do you use to keep the shelves of the Billy bookcase clean in the long term? Are there any specific cleaning agents you would recommend, or perhaps tricks to minimize dirt buildup over time? I’m also interested in whether certain materials or finishes behave differently when cleaned.
Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello gencay,
To keep the BILLY shelves clean, it’s definitely worth being a bit more careful with cleaning products. Most shelves are melamine-coated, which makes them durable but also sensitive to harsh chemicals.
I recommend first wiping off the dust with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. For tougher dirt, you can dissolve a little mild dish soap in lukewarm water and wring out the cloth in that solution. This way, you avoid damaging the surface. Important: Do not use abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, as they can cause scratches.
Another tip is to wipe the shelves regularly before a lot of dust accumulates; this makes the task much easier.
For long-term reduction of dust buildup, I’ve had good experiences with anti-static cloths, which attract less dust. Give that a try!

I also like to use diluted vinegar as a natural cleaner – a mix of water and some white vinegar (about 1:10) is more than enough. It disinfects, leaves no smell after drying, and is great for melamine-coated surfaces. Just avoid using undiluted vinegar, as it could damage the coating in spots.
And yes, modern microfiber cloths are definitely a must-have for these tasks. No lint, no scratches – perfect!
I think the recommendations so far are good, but I would be cautious with vinegar, even when diluted.
While melamine resin coatings are fairly resistant, acidic cleaners can still cause micro-damage over time that is hardly visible but can dull the surface or weaken the protective layer in the long run.
As an alternative, I recommend pH-neutral cleaners that are specifically designed for coated furniture. These tend to be a bit more expensive but are gentler and help maintain the appearance for longer.
Has anyone had long-term experience with such products?

Additional Information:
BILLY shelves are typically made of particleboard with a melamine finish. This coating is resistant to moisture and light wear but should not be treated with abrasive cleaners or strongly alkaline or acidic substances.
For cleaning the shelves, I recommend:
- Daily or regular dry wiping with a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber).
- If necessary, cleaning with a mild, pH-neutral all-purpose cleaner diluted (e.g., 1 part cleaner to 20 parts water).
- Always dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent moisture damage.
Avoid products containing solvents or harsh household cleaners (e.g., bleach, ammonia), as they can damage the surface.
Never use scouring powders or abrasive sponges.
Long-term experience with specialized furniture cleaners shows that they preserve the original appearance better than home remedies with vinegar. However, since these cleaners may be more expensive, you need to find your own balance between effort, cost, and results.

My tip: Just ask IKEA directly—they sometimes even recommend their own products. Otherwise, I use a mild furniture cleaner (brand Frosch) – cheaper than specialist cleaners from the furniture manufacturer and very effective.
Oh, and for dusting before dirt sticks, just pull an old sock over your hand – it’s super quick and even kind of fun 😉
Keep it up, you’ll get the shelf clean and ready to use for a long time! 🙂
