ᐅ Kallax Shelving Too Weak for Tool Storage – Any Alternatives?

Hello everyone,

I decided to use an IKEA Kallax shelf unit in my workshop for tool storage. However, I’ve noticed that the individual compartments of the Kallax unit are not strong enough for the amount and weight of my tools. The shelves bend under the load, and overall the structure doesn’t seem stable enough, especially when storing heavier power tools or multiple toolboxes at the same time.

So my question is: what alternatives to the Kallax shelf would you recommend that are particularly sturdy, suitable for tool storage, and possibly modular for expansion? I’m looking for a combination of durability, organization, and value for money. Are there any specific systems, cabinets, or even DIY solutions you can suggest?

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Could you clarify briefly how deep the shelf should ideally be for tools I use frequently?

A depth of 40–60 cm (16–24 inches) is usually sufficient for cordless drills, drivers, and similar tools. For larger equipment, closer to 60 cm (24 inches) is better.

it should hold at least 50–70 kg per shelf

Absolutely important, otherwise the shelves will bend quickly.

To revisit the planning of storage: the Kallax shelf is designed primarily for light to medium-weight items. However, tools can cause localized high stress that is not suitable for the particleboard shelves.

A combination of steel shelving with coated shelves and additional inserts for toolboxes is recommended. Metal frames provide high stability and durability.

I also suggest distributing the weight not only horizontally but across multiple shelves to reduce the load per compartment.

If possible, a small workshop cabinet with sturdy doors is useful to protect tools from dust.

Overall, it is often more cost-effective to invest a bit more upfront in a sturdy shelving system than to have to replace shelves later.

Exactly.

Here’s an additional practical tip: If you choose shelving with insert shelves, opt for metal shelves instead of wood, as they are less likely to bend. Stability also increases with welded or screwed frames.

If space allows, build a system with casters so you can move the shelves when needed.

Special workshop walls or pegboards (e.g., with magnets or hooks) are also very helpful for quick access to hand tools.
