Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from IKEA at home which I regularly use for books, decorations, and sometimes heavier items. I have noticed that the shelves and back panels often lose stability over time or even start to warp.

My question is: How can I extend the lifespan of my Billy shelves so that they remain stable, sturdy, and visually appealing even after many years?

I would be very grateful for any tips and advice, especially regarding suitable care and maintenance measures, load limits, and assembly options.

Thank you in advance to everyone who shares their experiences!

Hello,

I can only agree with Matthewt48 and blapau. Additionally, I would like to mention that the back panel, which is often fixed with only small nails, can sometimes be crucial for stability. If possible, the back panel could be secured with stronger screws or double-sided adhesive tape to provide extra support to the shelf.

Also, occasionally slightly shifting the shelves to check the connection points can be beneficial.

These small maintenance steps help keep the shelves in good condition for longer.

A quick tip from me: I always put foam rubber pads under the feet of my BILLY shelves. It works wonders against wobbling.

Thanks for the tip! Do you know if these pads mainly improve stability on uneven floors, or are they more for protecting the floor covering?

Also, I’m interested to hear if anyone has experience with reinforced shelves that can be easily swapped out without modifying the entire unit?

The foam rubber pads mainly improve floor protection, but they also help to level the shelf slightly by compensating for minor unevenness.

Reinforced shelves are usually not available directly from IKEA as accessories, but thicker wooden boards can be custom-cut to fit and placed inside. This is often the simplest solution.

Simply lay reinforced floorboards instead of the original ones. Foam rubber pads slightly improve stability and protect the floor.

In general, yes, you can remove the Billy shelves and replace them with sturdier MDF or plywood panels. Just make sure the dimensions fit exactly and the holes for the pins align properly; otherwise, you might need to do some adjustments.

It’s also worth attaching small brackets or metal strips underneath the shelves to prevent sagging.

These measures do make the shelving unit more stable but are recommended only for those with some DIY skills.

Hey, the pads do help level things out when the floor is slightly uneven. The shelf sits more securely without wobbling.

Glad you like the idea! Just give it a try before considering major modifications! 🙂
